How To Speak Thai?

I'm really trying to learn how to speak Thai.....how do you say "you" in Thai?

  • Answer:

If you speaking to a close friend or a colleague, use "Khun" ot "Thoe". However, if you talking to a dignitary or to a person of higher level. you should use, "Tan". If you want to refer to the King of Thailand, you should use; "Pra-ong Tan" (His Majesty).

There are many words for the word "you" and their use depends on the circumstances. คุณ (khun) is only used for peers. You would never use คุณ to address a monk, elderly person, older relatives, or anyone else who occupies a higher social standing or position of authority. If you did it would be disrespectful. You would also never use คุณ to address a child, servant, service person or anyone of a much lower social position. If you did you would look foolish and make the other person uncomfortable.
