    In Bangkok, take a trip up the river and go and visit the canals. You'll be off the beaten track and you'll see how people live on the river. It's not all pretty, but it's very natural. Ask at your hotel and try to get a local guide and boat. You're looking for someone who knows the smaller canals, not just the touristy ones. Good luck with the trip, it's a beautiful country and the people are excellent. They don't mind you taking photos and they're always smiling.

The Thai people are beautiful. Children especially are colorful and antimated. Older people have amazing faces. Kids especially love to be photographed but ask them first by pointing to your camera and nodding to let them know what you want to do. They will pose in wonderfully cute ways. As an added bonus, print a few pictures and go back later and give them copies.
