Thai Mobile Sim Card?
-
Hi I live in the UK and have been to Thailand so I do have a Thai sim card 12call As I have not been back for over 2 years I asked on here would the sim still be usable when I return next year 2012 I have called my sim card from the UK and sent a text message also in case somebody had the number passed onto them . I get the sorry no answer call back later message and not had a text reply So I am hopeful that when I pop the card back in my phone at the Airport on arrival it will work OK So my question is can I buy a Thai Sim card from Thailand and delivered to me in the UK say 2 weeks before I travel so I am sure I have a working sim card ? I know theres some shops after Immigration and I am sure you can use public call boxes but I need to be able to call when I arrive for meeting up Also where would be the easiest and quickest place to buy a Sim card at the Airport I know theres a Boots chemist near the meeting point and theres some shops on level 3 near the food areas If you have bought a sim card prior to going to Thailand where can I order 1 from My phone is unlocked so accepts any sim card thanks in advance

Answer:
You may be able to check to see if your 1 2 Call sim card is valid by reinstalling it in your phone and dialing *121#, it's worked for me in other countries although I don't know if it will work in the UK. Otherwise, the 7/11 next to the Meeting Point on the Arrivals Level sells sim card and top-up cards, and there are websites on the internet that sell Thai Sim Cards, but they are not usually well priced. Your SIM card probably will not work. The valid period for Thai SIM cards is usually no more than 90 days unless you top up via a Thai bank account (this usually gets your 6 or 12 months depending on how much you've topped up). They need to recycle the numbers and since Thailand has such a huge, huge percentage of people on pay as you go plans they want the numbers back so they can reissue them without having to purchase additional blocks of numbers. There are at least one or two different telecom booths after you exit Arrivals at the airport. Before you exit the airport there should be a AIS (12Call for pay as you go) and maybe a DTAC (I forget if it was DTAC or True) towards the left hand side of the terminal. You can purchase a SIM card for 100 baht and they either come with 100 baht credit or 50 baht credit (it was 100 baht credit when I last purchased at the airport and 50 baht when I picked up one from the AIS retail location Telewiz in Emporium). Either way, as long as you have a few baht on the phone that should be good enough to organize a meetup and get to a 7-11 or somewhere else where you can top up for additional phone credit. >>>> Just a follow up to the response below: I have never seen a SIM card take an hour to activate. Every SIM card I've ever purchased (and, I've bought a few ) has been instantly activated. Just follow the English instructions, dial into the activation line, and it's immediately active. If you buy it from AIS, DTAC, or one of the other stalls in the airport they'll do the activation for you right on the spot.

Most Thai sim cards are useless after 6 months. All sims are useless after one year of non use for sure. I would not count on it. AIS, DTAC and True all have stalls just outside of immigration. You can buy your sim there and have it set up by them and you will know for sure if it works. And you should be able to call immediately or within an hour. You can always make the one call on your sim and eat the roaming charges. If you know a friend there, ask them. BUT, it still has to be set up and accepted by the system. So buying a new Sim card is not the issue it's having it bought and activated.

From my own experiences, Thai SIM cards seems to expire unless you have 300 Baht or more on them when they are left unused for a prolonged period - my 12Call SIM card expired after not using it for 5 months when I wasn't in Thailand. My advise would be to buy a SIM card from 7-Elvan in BKK - there isn't any point in organising a SIM card to be sent to you from Thailand when you can just buy a SIM and slip it in your phone at the airport.
