Thailand visa-run help?
-
Please note: I am not working in Thailand! I'm staying with a family friend and considering going to school here. If I do choose to work/study in Thailand, I'll be sure to obtain the proper visa for it. I'm also traveling to other Asian countries this later Spring. --- Hello, I'm from the United States (American citizen) and was granted two 60-day visa entries to Thailand which expires in November, 2012. I entered Thailand on 13 November so my first visa should expire 12 January. I'm planning on going to Bangkok around the 8th to ask for a 30 day visa extension. If granted, my visa will expire in early February. My problem is, I really want to go to Hong Kong for Chinese New Year so I want to leave Thailand around 21 January and return around the 24th but this deducts over a week off of my visa extension if I do this which I really don't want. Can I go to Bangkok (8 January) and get a 30 extension. Then, go to Hong Kong (21 January) and receive a 30 tourist visa when I return to Thailand (so I'd have to leave the country after 30 days) instead of using my 60 day visa? If yes, how do I go about doing that? Should I contact the embassy?

Normally I would say to just get the re-entry permit but the whole point of an extension is that you'll be in the country beyond the visa expiration date and are asking to stay until you're ready to leave. If you leave the country and try to come back on an extension they may not give you the rest of the re-entry and force you to use the other 60 day visa. But, to be honest here, with no extensions you'll have spent 120 days (4 months) in Thailand. You should have a pretty good idea whether or not you're going to take classes by that point. Plus you need to get the ED visa paperwork started about 3 or 4 weeks prior to it being ready. Then you have to leave Thailand and apply for the visa in another country. So, you really should make up your mind, come back from Hong Kong and start things in motion to get your ED visa or make other plans.

YOu can ask for a re-entry visa in Bangkok BEFORE you leave for Hong Kong. Not sure if you're eligible for it on your current tourist visa, but it's worth a try. If approved, it allows you to r e-enter Thailand without cancelling out your current visa by leaving before it expires. I'm not 100% clear on the details, you'd need to inquire at the Thai immigration police dept office in Bangkok.
