What jobs can an anthropologist major find, outside of teaching?

How do I find teaching jobs in Phuket, Thailand? Any advice would be helpful!?

  • I am a 24 year old female from the United States and I am looking for jobs in Phuket. I have a Bachelors in International Relations and French and I recently completed a 144 hour TESOL class in Thailand. I have some experience teaching in the States as a long term (2 months) substitute high school French teacher and I'm teaching now in Trang, Thailand for the next 2 months. I'm only making 30,000 baht in Trang and its pretty hard to live on that. I was hoping to go to Phuket and make a little bit more. I am open to teaching at private, government schools or language schools. Also, I think it would be really great if I could work for a hotel or resort and teach English to their staff. I know that Phuket is a resort area so it is expensive to live there and the pay can be the lowest in Thailand. So, any advice on the things to avoid or what I should look for what be very helpful! Thanks

"I'm only making 30,000 baht in Trang and its pretty hard to live on that." * Well you ought to also consider that Phuket is just about the most expensive place in Thailand for a foreigner to live. Even Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Korat and Chonburi will be cheaper as far as living expenses goes. Besides Ajarn you also have these two Expat forums for Thailand. http://www.ajarn.com/ http://teakdoor.com/teaching-in-thailand/ http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/forum/46-teaching-in-thailand-forum/ Good luck.

Try ECC Language School in Phuket Town. I was there for two years and I liked it. The manager was wonderful (Her name was Goong).

First of all have you check out Arjan? http://www.ajarn.com/ - there you will be able to search for English teaching jobs in Thailand as well as get advice and tips. Since Phuket is a popular destination, for both tourists and long term visitors, it could be a little harder to land a job in this location. In my opinion, the best thing to do would be to e-mail the schools in Phuket, then actually visit the island and approach the schools with your qualifications. Bangkok also has a lot of international and private schools where I've heard the pay is generally quite good in comparison to other schools (up to 50,000 Baht per month) so if you want to earn a better salary, you might want to consider approaching and contacting BKK schools as well. Good luck.

If you worked for a hotel, you could ask for a hotel room and maybe their food as your main compensation, plus a little money as pay. You would want to think carefully about the tax consequences of that.

If you are young and female, your chances are great. Make sure they get you a proper work permit. Many places will tell you to work on a tourist visa, and many foreigners do just that. However, if your number comes up and you get caught, you are screwed. Another point is that your job is to entertain. Don't expect them to actually learn to speak english. The only way to learn a language is by verbalizing. You either have to work from audio files or with a tutor. In a classroom, there can't be 20 students talking at once; consequently, it is a waste of time.
