What's so nice about Taipei?

What is there to do/see in Taiwan/Taipei?

  • Hi, I will be travelling to Taipei on the 13th of December 2008 for 3-5 days. I just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions on what the best thing to do/see whilst I am there. Also: Wheres the best location to stay in Taipei? How will the weather be at that time of year? Whats the public transport system like? Any answers would be of great help. Cheers

  • Answer:

There are many places for you to visit and you visit Taipei for 3- 5 days, you can see quite a few. For it, you can visit the martyr's shrine to watch the change of guard ceremonial at around 11am , you can visit the National Palace Museum without applying a visa to see all things ancient China, take a dip at a hot spring at Peitou Hot spring area, take a stroll at Yangmingshan National Park, breathe easy at Hongshulin for the world's most northern tropical rain forest, go to night markets for its sumptuous snacks at same stalls like Shilin Night Market, Gongguan Night Market, Sanho Night Market etc., stroll out of the city and visit its old town of Jiufen for an old charm feel of Taipei County, visit its gold mine museum for the history that make you feel "rich" etc and the list goes on and on. Actually, there is no best area to stay in Taipei, cause the public transportation is quite efficent. As those attractions are far apart, therefore anywhere in the city is considered okay and its accessible to many parts of the city. Some areas to take note are Hsimen Ting, Taipei Main Station, Shandao Temple, City Hall, Yuan Shan, Jiantan etc. As for weather, its pretty windy there and the temp. hoovers around anywhere between 8 to 16 degrees Celsius. Last, but not least, the public transport system is mainly consist of MRT and buses. MRT has 5 main lines and 2 shuttle lines. For more info, you can visit: http://english.trtc.com.tw/travel95.asp As for bus, its quite complicated and are only useful if you know the routes. Mostly you won't really need to take the bus, but if you need to, you can consult me or any other askers here in Taiwan section, we are glad to assist you. Some notes of useful to you are: Take note that motor cycles are also using the pavement areas too and not just pedestrians only. Do not flush toilet or tissue paper down to the wc cause it will be stuck. Toilets as well as thrash bin are well hard to find, so if you are prone to visit toilets often or throwing things fast and/or often, you need to visit indoor amenities like museum, hotels, shopping centres, cafes, outdoor restraunts etc. to settle your stuff. Many food outlets do not have English speaking stuff, so you may have hard time communicate with them, learn some Chinese or visit those which do frequent by locals and foreigners alike, you will see. Hope the above can really help you to solve your problems. If you have any other problems, feel free to contact me by visiting my profile and hope you have a nice trip by then. See you.

Three to five days isn't enough time to even see Taipei, let alone the rest of Taiwan. You will spend all your time getting from one place to another, and only seeing Taiwan from the window of a bus or train. In terms of your questions about Taipei, "Kingston D's" answer is really thorough. I have nothing to add to it, other than to suggest you hang out more and mingle with people. There are little parks all throughout the city. Get yourself something to drink from anywhere near a little park--you can buy beer in a regular store and (provided of course that you don't cause any trouble) drink it in the park. Observe the life of the city. Kingston D must have had a typo in his answer, when he said the temperature is 8-16 degrees. It's NEVER 8 degrees in Taipei, even in the winter time. Wind is only a problem in a typhoon. Taipei will be VERY hot and humid, and heavy short rain in the late afternoon is very likely. The first thing you should do is buy an umbrella. If you add up all the umbrellas in my house and subtract one, that is the number of times I have been caught in a rainstorm without one. I remember one clerk in the 7-11 trying hard not to laugh at me. I got caught in the rain, and looked like I'd fallen into the river in the two minutes it took me to run to the store.
