    As I understand, proxy servers also allow Internet Service Providers to limit the bandwidth used, since the proxy server 'caches' frequently accessed content on their internal server. A proxy server is a computer that makes request on behalf of you. Think of it this way...you want to give someone a message, but you don't want that person to know it was you. So you tell a friend to go over and tell this person. Then your friend comes back with the response, you are using that friend as a "proxy".
