How to open a bank a/c in America?

Is there a bank of america in taipei, taiwan? can you use a american ATM card in taiwan atm's?

  • Are there any bank of america's or bank of america ATM's that you can use in Taipei, Taiwan? I don't want to get charged any fee's that the ATM's usually do if you don't use their bank. And can you even use american ATM cards on the ATM's there? I heard you can't anymore. Also if there aren't any bank of america's there, which bank has a debit card that doesn't charge you any crazy fees like bank of america does? I know there are way better banks out there than bank of america that don't charge crazy fees like overdraft fees 4 times in one day and $5 ATM withdrawal fees from other ATM machines.

  • Answer:

I have not heard of any BofA branches in Taiwan. On the bright side, I have in the past been able to use here an ATM debit card issued by an obscure little American-based credit union. Others in the Y!A Taiwan section report a similar ability to do likewise, yet it's often on a hit-or-miss basis.

There are no Bank of America ATMs in Taiwan. I am a customer and I looked. All foreign banks that have ATMs in Taiwan (that i know of) are Citi and HSBC, but they charge a transaction fee for every time you withdraw money. It is the foreign transaction fee. I'm sorry, but I dont think you can find a big bank that doesn't charge overdraft and withdraws from other ATM machines. Maybe a credit union, but not a bank. If you want to avoid the overdraft fees, keep your money in the checking account and dont have it automatically be transferred to savings. Also, instead of using other ATMs to get cash, make purchases with the debit card instead and then get cash from a Bank of America ATM later. Most places accept debit cards. That is what I do and i never paid any overdraft or fees to use other ATMs.

Bank of America has an office in Taipei. But can't find anything about an ATM. Also Bank of America has an ATM agreement with China Construction Bank where customers of one bank can use the ATMs of the other without fees. But I only see ATMs in Hong Kong, Kowloon and a few other places. Bank of Ameria has similar agreements with banks around the world. And also in addition to the ATM fee, you need to consider conversion fees. A bank with a lower ATM fee can more than make up for it with a higher conversion fee.
