Submarine canyons may have formed as river valleys during the ice age?

Was there a river in the Taiwan strait during the last ice age?

  • The isobaths (Lines of depths) of the map of the taiwan strait seem to suggest a valley created by a river. Does anyone know there used to be a river prior to the big flood of the last ice melt? Thanks in advance

  • Answer:

Yes. The Taiwan Strait reaches a depth of about 70 meters (230 feet). During the last ice age worldwide sea levels dropped by 130 meters. A river would have doubtless flowed down the exposed valley. Interestingly enough, even with no new ice ages, Taiwan is destined to join the mainland in several million years due to plate tectonics. This will likely create mountain ranges out of the ancient valley.

Interesting question... I believe that the topography of the Taiwan Strait is due to uplifting of the Asian and Philippine tectonic plates at their juncture in the vicinity of Taiwan, rather than from erosive action.

maybe there was, maybe there wasn't. they say amerindian look like mongolian because north america and asia used to be connected so people can just walk over. with global warming, maybe Taiwan will be under the sea one day, or will be united with mainland again, or maybe one day people can just walk to the mainland if hell freezes over, who can tell?
