What is the best way to find a paralegal job?

What is the best way to find an English teaching job in Taiwan, especially in Kaohsiung?

  • I've been in Taiwan for about a month now, and have been searching for a job. I've called probably close to 30 places and submitted resumes to about half of those. I've had only two interview offers. One of them I had to turn down because the job was much farther away than expected. The other one, I was rejected, BUT the interviewer said that he still thought I had good teaching skills and would have made a good teacher, as well. I'm fairly well-qualified. I have a CELTA, degree in a linguistics-related field, speak some Chinese, and have 1.5 years of experience teaching in Korea. Can anyone offer any other suggestions for applying to jobs here? How saturated is the market? It's seeming REALLY saturated right now... I've been using Tealit.com to find jobs (my most successful method, seeing as how it yielded two interview offers), and when I ran out of Tealit jobs to apply for, I also scouted out schools and cold-called them and dropped off resumes directly at others (completely unsuccessful, no interview offers). I'm really feeling like there are almost no English teaching jobs in Kaohsiung right now, not even for reasonably qualified teachers, and the few that exist, there are 30 people applying to each one... Does anyone have any suggestions? Any job-finding Web sites I don't know about? Any recruiters I don't know about? I'll take pretty much any job at this point that offers an ARC...

Some sites will get you started http://www.tealit.com/ http://www.therealtaiwan.com/ http://www.taiwanted.com/ http://www.streetbacon.com/ http://www.esl99.com/ http://www.eslisland.com/ http://www.taiwanho.com/ http://www.eslcafe.com/ Not all will help you find a job but most are useful references. You should be able to just walk into a lot of schools in Kaohsiung and ask for a job with your qualifications, but the market is rough right now and not everyone is hiring. The easiest way would be to go through someone like Reach 2 Teach or Footprints. Part of your problem is that lots of schools like to hire like a month or two in advance and a few weeks ago the new season for school just started I think (at least it did at my school). Don't lose heart. You'll find something if you keep your head to the ground. If you're dead set on Kaohsiung you can resort to agents... http://www.forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=76469&p=955005&hilit=EU+growth+footprints#p955005 I used Reach2Teach. If you get Richard you'll be impressed with how nice and patient he is. I'm not sure how many Kaohsiung jobs they got, but if he possibly can help you, he will, especially given your qualifications (he said me just having a 4 year degree and TESOL qualification put me ahead of 90% of the other applicants). http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Flats/7947/schookao.htm This is a 12 years outdated list of schools in Kaohsiung, but the corporate ones should still be around, so just look and see if you find any you haven't tried. If you have some Taiwanese friends, those could be your golden tickets to helping search out smaller local schools for you. Good luck, man! Try messaging me on here if you want more Taiwan-related sites (not all ESL based)

I live in Taichung~ and I know that a lot of the cram schools and language schools are taking applications but it seems that only a few are actually hiring people, it seems strange. I have heard that one of the HESS School for Young Scholars is hiring I am not sure which one because there are 3 that I know of here. I asked some of my Taiwanese friends, and they told me that you can search jobs on these two websites. These sites are only in Chinese, but they are very useful. http://www.104.com.tw/ http://www.1111.com.tw/default.asp I will look around for a few more and see if I can find something else. You might also want to try looking on Forumosa~ ( http://www.forumosa.com/taiwan/viewforum.php?f=35&sid=c5726872fc84d413202c1c35a65f9fd8 ) ~it is a great site for expats here in Taiwan.

I think you're right about the market becoming saturated. Too many Westerners want to bail out of the bad economic situation in the USA and elsewhere. You can also try looking online at "ESL99". Perhaps some of the other ex-pats here can lend a hand. I'll try to point them at your question. Chubu? Jerry? Anybody??? Care to help out? Thanks, Chubu! This is certainly disconcerting news. I figured there would be some influx because of the poor economic situation in America and abroad, but I always viewed teaching jobs in Taiwan as infinite and inexhaustible. I'd take a look at ESL99.com if you haven't already. Don't ever call places is the advice I've been given: dress up nice and walk into every school in your area and ask if they need a teacher. Play some paper-scissor-stone with the kids while you're there. I would also make up a short flier advertising your skills and availability for private tutoring, and post that around town. If you're really desperate you can look at kindergartens and teach illegally until you can find a better placement. Good luck!
