What jobs are typically suited for an english major?

What other jobs are foreigners permitted carry out in Taiwan other than teaching English?

  • Having lived in Taiwan for so long and loving the school that I was in I never really paid attention to the talk about other jobs that people did other than tutoring, or editing work. I have heard some people with wives that work here and there doing this and that... but again I never really listened to well. So aside from Teaching, what jobs are available to foreign residents of Taiwan? Like office work, restaurants, cafe's , whatever. I am not talking about the crappy labor work that the Filipino workers get saddled with or doing house work like the Malaysian women (not being racist just stating a fact). Rather some white collar jobs or service industry jobs. Well I am sure if you work in the service industry you need fluent Chinese... but anyway whats out there and how do people find these jobs? Does anyone know? I earnestly curious about this because I have heard so much talk about these kind of jobs but never really knew how people got them or who offers them or where to look for them. Earnest answer please and don't mention picking up a newspaper and looking in the classifieds unless you have a serious specific job that is current and easily found.

  • Answer:

The people doing 'normal' jobs here are usually married and/or permanent residence. There are restrictions on what types of businesses can employ foreigners (ARC restrictions). These are largely limited to the tech sector, international business etc. Look for a job outside of the approved sectors and you're facing visa runs every time your visa runs out and the risk that your employer is employing you illegally.

Teaching is definitely the biggest profession for English speakers. You can teach other subjects at international schools, or become a university professor- I hear both of those are great gigs. If you have a solid level of Chinese, translation work would be right up your alley. I've heard of people being a liaison with wherever they're from. Meaning, you would handle some of the international business with your home country. Being bilingual definitely helps here, as there seems to be less of those kind of job openings going around. I've also known people to grab bartender jobs, but I'm not sure how well the positions pay compared to my previous recommendations.
