What might happen if the Taiwanese people initiated a "Declaration of Independence"?
-
I understand that the ROC government under KMT control is opposed to declaring independence from "China" due to threats of military retaliation stipulated in the PRC constitution (and elsewhere). What might happen if the people of Taiwan initiated a "Declaration of Independence" FROM THE ROC AND PRC (i.e. the "one China") in much the same way as the USA threw off the chains of British rule whilst the Brits were still controlling the territory? Could the Taiwanese form their own body of representatives and petition the ROC government for independence, calling for a subsequent general election? Would the ROC-KMT resort to imposing Martial Law again, or might they accept the people's call for independence and recognize that many of them would still be allowed to remain at their posts even after a general election? And, what might the PRC do in the face of this "People's Movement" towards a true democracy in Taiwan which is separate from their country? Would they coerce the KMT into suppressing the people? Would they send their own military forces across the strait to "put down this anti-Chinese rebellion"? What might the USA, other foreign states, and the UN as a whole do about it? Would they violate the UN Charter and fight against the will of the Taiwanese people?

Well so far you have two of the most uninformed people in Yahoo Answers telling what they dreamed in their dr... stupor. You time this question very good. I have just finished reading about a meeting today here in the US on the Taiwan situation. I feel sure the answers you have already (the 2) could tell me what was talked about and released on the news today. I hope you know I was joking. CI has never wrote anything I know of that had real facts backing him up, but he looks like a teacher with a tie and glasses, ha. Anyway what I just read was the US President is considering some steps that really nobody will be happy with, maybe not even the American people. Taiwan has the F-16A I think the paper said. They are saying the US is going to sell Taiwan the F-16B and C. They did not say what the differences were only the B and C were newer. They also said they would probably sell some kind of radar to go with these aircraft. The paper said as soon as this was released China sent a nasty letter to the US threatening the US not to sell the radar. The US also is thinking of asking your president to not declare formal Independence now and in return the US will invite him to Honolulu in December to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Group. Lets see, oh yes the PRC. The President is saying if the PRC would sign a Pledge of no force against Taiwan the US will not recognize Taiwan and will ask all other nations to do the same. But he is also saying if China uses force the US will instantly recognize Taiwan as a Independent nation and come to their aid. The paper quoted a Chinese general as saying "if the US comes to the aid of Taiwan nuclear war could reach the US mainland." I am not sure if it was the Assistant Secretary of State or the Secretary of State says this would result in the destruction of China. There are some crazy people running their chops now. I know in the US the military does not have the authority or the permission of our government to speak for the government and or country. This leaves me thinking who is in charge of the Chinese Government? And are the generals in China now beginning to talk and act like the leader of North Korea? Does the President of China or the Generals of China talk for this country? Joseph A Bosco was the author of this article and he was quoting the National Security Consultant as his source. I just looked at the Arms Limitation Agreement the US is working on with Russia. We have more than 2000+ nuclear warheads for our missiles and another 3000 nuclear bombs of assorted use. I am guessing these are the tactical bombs everybody talks about. The official count for China is some where around 275 of the big ones like the US I believe. This would make me think these generals were pulling a North Korea. But there are crazies all over the world. This is not funny but I do not see China being to serious. But as for Taiwan, if this did happen I would hope they would not let these people who glow in the dark come to their island to live, altho it might not be long.

Very few people in Taiwan seek unification with Mainland China. Popular opinion turned firmly against unification many years ago. The vast majority of Taiwanese recognize that China is the emerging military threat. Everyone is afraid of a Communist, so Taiwan wants to avoid a Commie. The old argument for Taiwanese independence assumed that China was bad, America was good, and international trade was using the Chinese as slaves. The new reality is that China's Communist government didn't care for Chinese people, an irresponsible government allowing child labor and sweatshops. Did you know that China is Taiwan's only military threat? The Taiwanese people can't wake up in the morning without knowing China pointing 1500 missiles at the island, so why fight for your freedom? Independence is a reality, unification is a fantasy.

Very few people in Taiwan seek separation from Mainland China. Popular opinion turned firmly against separatism many years ago. The vast majority of Taiwanese recognize that China is the emerging global leader to replace America. Everyone loves a winner, so Taiwan wants to join China. The old argument for Taiwanese independence assumed that China was bad, America was good, and international trade was unimportant. The new reality is that China is a prosperous and socially responsible country, America is bankrupt and headed toward its own civil war, and international trade is vital for Taiwan's future. Did you know that China is Taiwan's biggest trading partner? The Taiwan economy cannot exist without China, so why fight against your economic friend? Unification is better than separation.

I just curious why didn't ex-President Lee & ex-President declare INDEPENDENT when they have the chance? What are they afraid of? I do NOT think any Taiwanese government officer has the courage to declare independent.
