What is the way to get Jobs in Singapore for Indians?

Why non-chinese Singaporeans having difficulties in finding job in Singapore?

  • I will always remember this during sch days every morning my sch mates&i had to say the Singapore's pledge - (phrase) "....regardless race, language or religion...." But as soon as i finished my studies my friends and i (non-chinese) find it hard to get a permanent job here even with our diploma certs. Most job interviews/job agencies/job requirements they want "Billingual/Mandarin Speaking/Chinese only" Its sad!!!!! We are brought up that Singapore is a multi racional country, "regardless of race, language or religion." Singapore is not a chinese/China country but why the job requirement here is COLOURED??? Im sure many non Singaporeans out there feel the same way...you can even see it on the Jobs classified newspaper straits times. Majority office jobs here are flooded by chinese especially town area/shenton way...u name it.

  • Answer:

I agree with the post. Non chinese Singaporeans have difficulties in finding jobs here. I have friends who are PR's and who have been told that they can' t think of any govt jobs here in Singapore for example in MOE schools or any childcare too. This is frustrating. For spouses who are qualified and have been educated in US etc., they have not got jobs and the reason can only be that they don't prefer PR's at all. Another interesting thing is that O levels from Singapore are considered but Masters from US are not considered. May be if you become a citizen????? I don't know. Also I will take the opportunity to talk about the crowd in all the places and I don't know why the govt wants to increase the population. Schools should work on reducing the number of students in class Imagine 40 students in one class. What a pity. Why does the govt not work on all this. Otherwise, the county may be clean, orderly etc but certain basic things like the education, crowds in places, number of children in classes etc should change.

Yes! most of us got the same answer. We knew there are "Quota" in most of the Authorities / Companies to give non-chinese an opportunity. Yet we are seeing non-chinese "skip" the good jobs, some prefer to join so call their "Tribe" e.g. Fast-food delivery, Carpark Attendance. While other don't meet the requirements. Just take a look on the number of student non-chinese Singaporeans in Polytechnics & University? And ratio out, you will find that it's chinese and non-chinese Singaporeans having difficulties in finding job. * Just to name it, I do see non-chinese working in Towncouncil, HDB,Giant, M1, DBS bank, Hitachi Chemical, Panduit, Teachers, etc...

Easy. When a country speaks of "...regardless of RACE, LANGUAGE or RELIGION" or known as "Multi-Racial", that country and its people have a serious "Racial, Language or Religion Discrimination". Even TEMASEK is venturing into China and not Indonesia or Malaysia nor India.

I guess many people have opinion and decision why they choose Chinese more than other race...i guess a lot of people do have the answer in their heart but just do not say it out...it maybe due to the global econ my that the China Market is rising..if u want to be more competitive...pick up an extra languages would be a better suggestion rather than complaining why i cannot find a job or other races could not find a job just because of their races. I don think it is the problem of races...its the problem of competitiveness and the attitude of upgrading.

Hi Nora, Dont give up. Keep on trying to look for job. Some employers dont mind non-chinese. Although you have to try harder than the non-Chinese. Mostly prefer Chinese because they have their own reason. Employer has the right to choose. If you couldnt find any, fly to other parts of the world, where jobs wait for you...

Well yes, our national pledge does indeed have that, and we have things like Racial Harmony Day. But the thing is, in such wide matters, it is often hardly the case, though i expect its largely an unspoken sentiment. One example that can be used to highlight this is freedom of speech. Everyone knows that there really isn't REAL freedom of speech. :). We all have to control our tongues but well. It could be a good thing too, looking at all the rascist things going on now. What I'm saying now is that... Although they might put up signs saying this and that, the decision to hire new employees, in Singapore, would be mostly Chinese, although there is a steadily increasing number of other races too. There might be no open discrimination, but i'm still sure that most of us do not mind people of other races. I, as a chinese, have grown up in a multi-cultural hub known as a HDB flat, with people of all races and nationalities living all around me, and personally i've never been rascist. :). Also, there could be other reasons why some people are not hired ya know? Not everyone would be so childish to just look at race, i mean. You do have to understand from the employer's point of view, that although some people may meet the requirements, they have to select the best. They do want the best for themselves too, right? I do not think that the job requirements here are really... Well. If you put it that way, 'colour oriented'. Such things are really, really sensitive and it'd be really dangerous to misunderstand an employer's choice of his desired, best employee as racism ;). Still, good luck with finding a great job. Although yes, there are racist people out there, there are those who are mature enough not to be. Don't hate everyone because of a few black sheep. :).

i guess those jobs which specify billingual are mostly those retail sales related jobs, therefore non-chinese may be at a slight disadvantage. as for your comment on majority of office are flooded by chinese, i do agree with your observation. A possible answer is the population distribution. around 77% of singaporeans are chinese, so naturally you will see more chinese white collar citizens working in the business hub of singapore.
