Recent cost of living in Singapore?
-
I was working in singapore for 3years as a junior executive & left in 2006. recently I have been offered another Job in Singapore, since I have my PR the transition could be done quite fast if I do accept the offer. I'm a single male, with simple needs..I use to cover all my expences within S$1600/month, (as below breakdown) during my stay in 2003-2006. Rent (Master room) - S$400 Food - S$400 Transport - S$100-150 Mobile - S$100 Misc - S$600 Total - S$1600 Had things changed drastically during the last few years? as I get to hear lot of changes in the cost of living now a days in Singapore, specially on the real estate being very expensive which had driven the rents off the roofs. However I did some research on some related websites (roomsbd.com etc) & still found decent rents. Just to get a real feel to whats going on there, would like some ideas from you who lives in singapore currently... Since I've been out for awhile I have lost touch with some of the friends I made in Singapore..so had to come in to this forum & post this...

Depending on the are of your stay, I think it's near impossible to find a master room for 400 bucks around town or the business districts. I'm not sure about the exact price but a small one-room apartment could be rented out for about 2500 bucks or more around Raffles. You should be able to get a pretty good gauge from that. Good news is, real estate price has been on the decline for the past few months. If you do rent a place, I suggest you sign at least a 2 years contract (or more) as the word is, real estate is going to go back up by the end of the year. Transport, if you're thinking of MRT and buses, are pretty much still the same except for a slight jack in the price. I commute from Novena to Bugis almost everyday and it costs me around 1.90 back and forth (I take MRT in the morning and bus at night). I spend about 2.40 from Novena to Clementi (MRT back and forth). Mobile, of course, it's all about taking up the right plans. M1, Singtel and Starhub are crazy competitive these days. So you shouldn't worry about high prices there. Food, of course, is still more or less the same if you're sticking to hawker centers and food courts. But compared to 2005, again, there's a tiny jack in the pricing range. Shopping and other things in general have gone up. Things like clothes, books, etc. have definitely gone up a little bit. But they're not as noticable as things like rents, etc. So, not much to worry about, really. Good luck with your new job! :)
