There is suppose to be a lot of racism in Singapore against Indians, is this true?

Answer:
Yes; there is significant racism directed against Indians in Singapore. Whilst violence is either less common than Australia or Canada, it is also less likely to be reported. There is also a pro-Chinese migration policy in place; many Indians have complained about openly discriminatory job advertisements (which are illegal and carry heft fines against both the company and the executives that place them in the two other countries already mentioned). They also face discrimination when finding housing. For an example of this take a look here: http://www.mom.gov.sg/publish/momportal/en/press_room/press_replies/2005/20050507_-_Employmentpracticescannot_discriminate.html (A singaporean government website) Also take a look here: http://singapore.gumtree.sg/c-Apartment-House-Real-Estate-condos-apartments-units-houses-IKEA-Bukit-Merah-Lane-Blk-2-W0QQAdIdZ146138036 Again, that type of add is illegal. Take a look at the Australian Gum-tree or Canadian gum-tree and see if you can find any ads where the dominant ethnic group advertise is such discriminatory terms. You may also want to visit this site: www.asianracism.blogspot.com And finally, for an academic look at racism in Singapore (and in particular against Indians) have a look at this paper: http://www.crsi.mq.edu.au/news_and_events/documents/selvarajvelayutham_000.pdf Update: To add to my answer: the above responses also highlight racism against Indians and the lack of understanding by non-Indians. So there is an Indian president; so what? Barack Obama is president of the USA; is there not still racism against african-americans in the USA? Look at all the responses that show racist attitudes: Indians are "problems" for not turning up on Mondays; take more medical leave and so on and so forth - a virtual regurgitation of all the racist stero-types that plague Indians. Singapore has a lot going for it, i love it, but its important that we are honest and admit our flaws as well. Racism by the majority against Indians is one of these. Personal experience is just that; I took the effort to post factual information and examples to back up the view that there is INDEED racism against Indians in Singapore.... even the a Singaporean ministry highlighted this. you can also check out the following: http://vasanthan.blogspot.com/2007/03/is-there-racial-discrimination-against.html http://aaron-ng.info/blog/racism-in-singapore-the-sequel.html (a really good discussion on this blog) http://www.colorq.org/PetSins/article.asp?y=2005&m=5&x=5_1

I don't know what prompt you to post this question. We in Singapore are a multiracial society, without any discrepancy to any one race. The government had allotted certain percentage of the quota or availability in housing, education and other entitlements for the Indian, Malays and other, excluding the majority which are the Chinese. At most social events and gatherings, it is usually attended by all races, including Indians. For example, Information on Indian events and certain TV programs were being telecast over a English channel. In Singapore, the present generation are identifying themselves as Singaporean, not by their race.

There is no real racism against Indians, as you can see the president is an Indian. That said, there may be some unspoken discrimination against Indians when come to hiring. Some Chinese employers or Chinese human resources managers are wary of hiring them, because of bad experiences that they do not show up for work on Mondays, they take a lot of MCs and have a lot of crap stories about relatives sick/passing and need urgent leaves. I've got a friend who works in the customer service sector. She had a "serious complaints" file and majority of these headaches come from Indians. Do not know why, but maybe they are good at fighting for their own rights? Well, we definitely know that they have this gift as the best top lawyers in Singapore are mainly Indians. In case you think I am racist, I've got 2 great Indian pals - one from North India and another Singaporean-Indian.... absolutely fabulous guys! Intelligent, caring and very helpful!

Do you know the President and one of the vice PMs are of Indian origin? There are plentiful of successful Indian Bankers, businessmen, Engineers etc and continue to look for foreigners with specialized experise from all countries. So is it true there that the Indian race is been unfairly treated? Regardless of race, it is one who is more competent in meeting the job requirements. if you are dealing with China. You need to know various dialects, such as Cantonese , Mardarin and Hokkien etc, and cultures in dealing with the Chinese. There are language training programmes available, job opportunities are not basing on race but matching to needs!

Like what sort of racism are you talking about ? We haven't had a race clash since the 1960s. There are Indians who do all sorts of decent jobs in Singapore in areas such as law, banking, teaching, etc. The more notable lawyers are Indians. My dentist is Indian and he's better than the Chinese dentist who actually put a gap between my two front teeth. Of course, the less qualified will work in undesirable jobs but that's the same with the Chinese and Malays too. (FYI, I am Chinese Singapoean.)

I have not heard of any racist attacks against Indians in Singapore, like those attacks in Australia or Canada.
