Is Downloading Music/Movies/Softwares/Porn Illegal in Singapore?

  • Hi Friends, I am new in Singapore. I love downloading music/movies/software/porn and downloading is really a cheaper way of doing things. Can I download these things in Singapore without any legel action for my "PERSONAL" use only? Please suggest guys. Sanju

Theoretically speaking, downloading of any copyrighted materials is illegal, whether if the link comes from Blogspot or any torrent sites. (That is unless there's explicit mutual agreement between the site and the producer of the works) The fines are hefty if you get caught.

You can legally download music, movies, and software which you have purchased a license for. As an example, if you go to Symantec.com and buy their software online you can download it to your computer. No problem. Downloading pirated material and porn is a different matter. Are you familiar with Singapore's quaint custom of flogging offenders with a cane? I hear it is quite ghastly.
