How to quit my job? What is an excuse you gave your employer?

How to get a job with a good employer in Singapore?

  • I did not renewed my 1st contract in singapore when it expired 3 years ago due to frequent delays in payroll. I gave enough resignation notice but my employer kept delaying the settlement of my last 1.5 months' pay for no reason. I am just a foreigner here, nothing much i can do. I was too naive and did not know much of the labour law then. I got another job but the same thing repeat. My salary was always delayed for 2-3 months. I got my pay after much begging, I gave enough resignation notice and quit. They had cancelled my work permit but kept telling that they will settle my 2 months salary but i still do not receive it after 4 months. I have an appointment with the ministry of manpower set for this friday. I had done nothing wrong during my employment and had never been given any warning letter. I believe i am clean, will i get my money? Are there any possibility that my ex-employer will get an exemption from MOM and not required to pay my salary? Many of my friends working in singapore are facing the same problems. Now I am just too scared of getting another job in singapore. Why is it too hard to get a good employer in singapore? What is the chances of getting a good employer here?

  • Answer:

You have nothing to fear from MOM. So long as you are legally employed, there is no reason your ex-employers will be exempted from paying your salary. The law is strict on the employers and they will get into trouble for delaying payment for no reasons. Chances of getting a good employer? Well, perhaps it depends on the type of companies you join or type of industries you are in. Frankly, I seldom hear of this problem other than in industries that are heavily dependent on foreign labour e.g. construction. Finally, very important fact. MOM will not side your employers just because you are a foreigner. So long as you are legally employed, you have nothing to fear from the local authorities

You are lucky this happened to you in Singapore. Singapore and Hong Kong have laws to protect foreign employees. Get your papers and grievances sorted out for Friday and everything should be a breeze.

if u have any problem regarding delay in salary payment then u can approach to MOM rather than putting urself in trouble by being aggressive to ur employer

Here's what you can do: 1. Avoid small companies or initial start-ups. These companies usually have capital problems and are not grounded in MOM labour laws. Chinese companies are notorious for deferring payment on salary and CPF. You can lodge a complaint to CPF Board and MOM in this case for compensation. Be firm. Chinese bosses can be manipulative and cunning especially towards ignorant or weak willed employees. Don't let them play you. 2. Get a government posting with the civil service (eg. STB, HDB, etc.) (https://app.vog.gov.sg/Presentation/index.aspx). They usually pay promptly. Another option would be to find a reputable MNC company (eg. Microsoft, etc.) or quasi government outfit (eg. Temasek Holdings, etc.) These are the more stable companies to work for, with more organised human resource departments and financial accountability. When you complain to CPF, make sure you have your employment letter, your latest salary statement. This will be proof of your employment. Get an employer's handbook to familiarise yourself with Singapore employment.
