Where is the best place for foreign exchange if I am going to Singapore? Airport or money changers?

I'll be coming from the Philippines. Should I just exchange money from the banks here? Is it better to bring US$ or S$?

Answer:
The best rate is to be found at the money changers in Raffles Plaza, do not use the ones at the airport and do not change it in the Phillipines. I have changed Euros, AUD, Sterling and USD and I work at a bank.

money changer rates are more competitive. Try those at chinatown area or change alley.

From my experience, you should go to money exchenger outside airport. In airport the rate quite bad for buying as well as selling the currencies. Banks also offer not attractive rate.

If you are chaning your pesos anyway, I would say change them to S$ so that you do not lose even more when you end up having to convert the $ to USD later. Basically USD is only accepted in departmental stores etc. Do not change at the airport or bank, the changes at the airport are actually under the bank and therefore rates are not so good. I suggest changing them at the money changers in neighbourhood area. Depending where you are staying, I'm sure people can give you suggestions for good changers, there are a few I go specifically too. Though I try not to go to those at Lucky Plaza or the city area as they tend to not give tourists very good rates. If you have the time, go from shop to shop which are close by to compare. Esp if you are changing a big amount they should give you an even better rate.

Try CRANTE MONEY EXCHANGE in Chinatown - People's Park Complex at Level 1. It is very famous in this complex. This money changer is great and their currency exchange rates are good. That's why you will always see a long queue waiting for the money exchange!!!! You can either bring USD or Peso to Singapore. But I think USD is better and every money changers in Singapore except USD and it is more versatile & recognised. However if you want to bring Peso, it is also perfectly fine. Visit http://www.streetdirectory.com and http://www.yellowpages.com.sg for road guides and directions to get there.

If you have US$, bring here to change to S$. When you arrive, change a little (say, US$100) at the Airport for transport, tipping, food/drink etc, ask for small change. Shopping areas like Chinatown, Peninsula Plaza and Orchard Road (Lucky Plaza, Far East Plaza) have many licenced money changer that gives pretty good rates. (They accept Philippines Pesos too, so you need not purposely change to US$ before arriving, to save you some exchange differences). The Banks, Hotels and Departmental Stores give poorer rates, so not advisable to change there.

Change at the money changer. Just bring your pesos. You can try the exchanges at Lucky Plaza which usually see a high flow of Filipinos there, but better rate can be gotten at People's Park Complex, if you can get there. This complex houses many travel agencies and so do see plenty of travellers.

It won't make a great big difference unless you're changing like in the range of 10000s
