Are children spoiled in Singapore?

Expat's children in Singapore have to do military service?

  • I have a hypothetical question. If I, an American citizen, move to Singapore for work, meet someone there, get married, and have children; do my sons also have to do the mandatory military service if we all decide to stay in Singapore? Would they be called back if the family decides to move away from Singapore to go back to USA? Thanks!

  • Answer:

some scenarios: 1. if they (male children) are Singapore Citizens, then they will have to do the National Service when they come of age. 2. if they are not Citizens, and if you take up Permanent Residence status in Singapore, your children will be on Dependant Pass. Can't remember what age, but i think it is at 16, your children (male), will have to sign a declaration to serve the National Service, if they are to continue to stay in Singapore. Otherwise, they can leave the country and try to enter Singapore on their own merit again in future, just like the way you did (either thru Employment Pass or Social Visit Pass etc). I believe they can continue to study in Singapore, but they would not be treated as Dependent Pass holders. Instead they will be classified as foreign students, hence the school fees will be a lot higher.

Persons born in Singapore, with at least one parent who is a Singapore citizen, are "natural born" Singapore citizens. It is possible for them to also hold citizenship with another country until age 21, but such dual citizenship does NOT exempt males from compulsory Singapore military service. After turning age 21, Singaporeans may renounce their citizenship, but not until AFTER their military service is completed. Male children are not allowed to leave Singapore for vacations, school, or any reason after their 16th birthday. This is to prevent kids from running away from their military obligations when they get older. Singapore is a highly militarized society due to its troubled history, small size, and vulnerable location amid relatively unstable countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines). Singapore has no choice but to defend its sovereignty by maintaining a high level of military readiness. Singapore's military, which is very advanced for the size of the nation, is a strong deterrent against potential aggressors.

YES and NO ! Under the Enlistment Act, all male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, unless exempted, are liable to register for National Service (NS). Following the completion of full-time NS, they will be required to serve up to 40 days of Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS) per year for the duration of their ORNS training cycle till the age of 50 years (for officers) or 40 years (for other ranks). * if you son is Singapore citizen or PR. YES.* even he is PR and do not stay in Singapore , as long he hold Singapore BLUE IC / REENTRY PERMIT, he will be call up for NS when he reach the age for NS. keep in mind . IF he don't report for NS upon " call up " , Singapore government got the 100 % right to put him to jail even he hold USA passport. unless he don't " steps " into Singapore any more . if he given out Singapore PR ( he got 100 % right to do that ) upon call up for NS , he will never get any student pass / work pass for him to stay in Singapore again. Singapore may even " ban " him to re-entry as an tourist. if you marriage to Singapore citizen or PR. you child allow to follow" mother " become Singaporean or PR. However it can be " arrange " not to taken as Singapore citizen or PR. Please check will USA embassy in Singapore, as you child is FIT to be USA citizen also. Singapore's birth rate is at a ll time low, so there are less young males to do national service (ns). They chose to come here, so they have to contribute back.
