First trip to Singapore and I'm looking for recommendations on "Must See" places to visit?
-
I live in the U.S.and have traveled all over the world to include much of Asia and the Pacific Rim on both business and vacation trips, but have never been to Singapore. I will be there Mid-March for a week on business and have included a few extra days to see the sights. I would appreciate recommendations from present/past residents or road warriors who have been there regarding "Must See" things to see and do including, historical places, restaurants or best places grab a drink. Yes, I do have a copy of the "Lonely Planet" guide book, but I would greatly appreciate any first hand recommendations.

Answer:
Must-see places 1. Geylang, Singapore's red light district. It is a must-see because Geylang is very unlike the strict and clean Singapore. There you might find it interesting. Lots of illegal stuff going on and it's quite messy. Locals go to Geylang for its cheap and good Chinese food too. You might even witness gang fights. Go there if you're adventurous. Of course, lots of people have criticised Geylang but hey, every country has a place like Geylang, isn't it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geylang 2. Clarke Quay. Singapore's nightspot. You will find a lot of clubs and pubs here by the river. There are many themed pubs and this is where all the beautiful people gather to party the weekends away! http://www.clarkequay.com.sg/ 3. City Hall area. Here you can see a lot of historical buildings. From the Old Supreme Court, the Singapore River to St Andrews' Cathedral and many colonial buildings. Alight at City Hall MRT station and explore by foot. 4. Orchard Road. Our shopping belt. http://www.orchardroad.sg/ 5. Bugis Street. This place is for cheap shopping. It is a street market selling cheap clothes, shoes and accessories. 6. Sentosa. Sentosa is an offshore island resort. Universal Studios is housed on the island and there are several beaches too. However, the beaches in Singapore pale in comparison with other beaches in Thailand or Malaysia. http://www.rwsentosa.com/Attractions/UniversalStudiosSingapore http://www.sentosa.com.sg/en/ 7. Singapore Zoo. Every tourist loves the Singapore Zoo. It's beautiful and animals are kept in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitat. You will be able to see lions, cheetahs, giraffes, elephants, penguins, snakes, birds and a whole variety of animals! http://www.zoo.com.sg/ 8. Lau Pa Sat. A hawker centre selling LOTS of cheap and delicious local food! http://www.laupasat.biz/home.html Singapore is small but we try to HAVE EVERYTHING on our small island. It is expensive but if you have the money, it will be fun! http://www.yoursingapore.com/content/traveller/en/experience.html http://app.www.sg/

"pretty" gave you some good recommendations... if you wanted to narrow it down i would say skip sentosa (nothing special if you ask me). along the river (clarke quay, boat quay) is pretty cool at night. geylang is usually pretty entertaining. orchard area is like all the high end merchandise and stuff, pretty cool mall areas... if you really want a neat experience, i suggest going for some lunch or dinner in little india on a sunday (everyone has off on sundays). since you are american, i also must suggest you go for some "murtabak"... most westerners, myself included, seem to really like this muslim dish. i recommend victory or zam zam's (victory if you ask me) on victoria street. really great food. also i would suggest visiting the sands casino/esplanade area, that's worth a see
