Why are people so nice and friendly in the Philippines?

Why do so many retired American vets in the Philippines hate American people and Black people?

  • I've noticed that a lot of retired Americans (mostly vets) hate the people back in the United States. It almost seems that a lot of these people are just bitter towards their fellow Americans. I also notice that a lot of these old veterans don't like Black people back in America and can't stand the fact that the USA has a Black president (or a president of color for that matter). Personally, I'm proud to be an American and don't have bitter feelings towards the people. Americans are great people who accept diversity from all over the world. However, a lot of retired American in the Philippines seem to hate people back in the US. Why do retired Americans hate people in the US so much? Why such bitterness? Was it because they were rejected by American society?

Thank you for pointing out the 800 lb Gorilla, so to speak, in the room. Yes, in large part you are correct. Of course this does not apply to all Americans living abroad, only to those who effectively in their minds have escaped or have exiled themselves out of frustration. By no means do I include those who don't fit the profile I will go into next; there are some good ones out there. But some of these guys are so paranoid and convinced that America today is being overrun by non-whites/immigrants and their "crazy strange ways" who seek to destroy their Judeo-Christian heritage (e.g., whites-only rule). Of course, in not-so-many words. There is a paradox to all this: that these types are the self-titled "patriotic" "all-Americans" they boast this to all who could or couldn't care less to hear YET if you examine them closely, they embody all that is very unamerican: intolerance for differences (racism, misogyny, homophobia) and a penchant for not working hard (they've come to the Phils to "retire" decades early). Their idea of the concept of individual "freedom" is tainted by a fundamental ideological flaw: you are free to do as you wish only IF you look and act like them to begin with. Otherwise the rules and privileges they enjoy dont apply to you. The paradox I alluded to is why do they come to the Phils of all places? Because here they can regain their sense of superiority they believed they lost back home. In the Philippines, no matter how disfigured, bigoted, unsophisticated, immature, mean-spirited, uneducated or grotesque you are considered in your home country, most people will treat you there as a god. In the Philippines everyone agrees with their largely extremist views not because the pinoy shares the same beliefs as them but simply out of unconditional respect and fear of how he'll react if you raised an objection. They can mistreat and intimidate the people of the Philippines by their mere presence and for the most part we let them do it with a smile on our faces. These guys would not dare pull a stunt like that in Western Europe, Singapore or China less they receive the full wrath of the local police force--but they feel absolute hubris in the Philippines. We are a unique people that way. Whose fault is that? Good night.

Yeah, I ran into a few racist white men here in the Philippines. Philippines is where they show their true racist facial expression. While in the U.S. they hide their true identity. Cowards.

They probably don't hate American's President because he's black. Decent people everywhere detest him because he's a Communist, a traitor and a skunk.

Joe

They hate their fellow americans back home because they have wasted their youth fighting meaningless wars where as those back at home enjoyed their life.

You are making an assertion about many Vets and retired Americans. If I may allow me to give my opinion. I am a white Vet and a retired American living here in the Philippines. I do not hate people of color... I do not resent the fact we have a President of color. I do not hate Americans or the American society.. Now that being said I am not everybody I am only me. I am a conservative and a Christian with strong Beliefs in both Arenas. Many of the retired Vets are also conservative. which means the believe in small government and personal responsibility with little government as possible. The current Administration is opposed to those values. they believe in big controlling government. The US government now owns major portions of Private companies and also controls much of the day to day Activity of said companies. Because the president won on hope and change there is now little hope and the changes are not in line with conservative thought.. Therefore there appears to be so much animosity. The Argument that many Retired Americans are racist is without foundation, there are racist everywhere. Especially here where the tribal mentality of the Philippines is the result of conflicts that stretch by for centuries. That is why the word foreigner is used so freely. And we are treated to the white tax (overcharging) and other rights granted to Philippine people in America are not granted to foreigners here. If we treated Filipinos that way in American we would be in court for Racist behavior... does that make Filipinos Racists?? I am here instead of America because I love my family and we live here and reason number two is I can afford to live on my very small SS check.. I could never do that in America without government assistance which I oppose. Most of us who love and live here because we can not do otherwise. Does that mean we hate Filipinos, who treat use poorly or are much richer than we are? I say we love Filipinos and Americans for the most part. But My Friend there are Racists and Jerks on both sides if the Ocean and around the world. We all need to get some moral compass to live by in reality and not just talk. There is Absolute Wrong there is Absolute Truth..

Whoa- I had almost the exact opposite experience! I have met retired vets who are black, and hispanic and white- but no hint of racism (at least the real scary kind). Maybe you heard some off-color joking and made assumptions. I find it surprising and kind of ironic you found American racists living in the Phils. A far as anger to the ol' US, well I was there last November during the election and stumbled on a party from the embassy at the Mall of Asia when Obama was pronounced the winner on CNN. I was invited to attend the celebration by embassy staff, and I angrily put them off- "I came here to get away from you people!" Perhaps retired vets and ex-pat Americans just want an escape from whatever they left behind and react like I did last November. I certainly did not want to hang around some staffers from Iowa and Vermont while I was in Manila. Conversations I have had with ex-pats always seem to drift back to the US and I think there is some anger and frustration that these guys just could not live a healthy life with their pensions back in the US- whereas in the Phils they can have a really nice apartment and first rate medical care, plus good looking girlfriends to boot. Asians respect age, whereas we lock up old people. The ex-pats I met at least around Manila and Cebu City were joyeous about Obama, with one exception (seven for, one against). Our country does have a racist streak and some of these people will carry prejudices with them wherever they go. But my experience is that the ex-pats I have met are generally good accomodating people as far as racial tolerance and tend to avoid stereotyping. Fewer real racist Americans there than here percentage-wise, at least thats my experience.

If they hate blacks they went to the wrong country. They should have went to Europe. If they hate black people in the US they hate you to. I feel sorry for people who hate others because of skin color. If that is true, why do they go there you would think if they hate blacks, that would be the last place they would go.You people is a dark race.

Camaro

Mabey because 50% of foreigners who visit the Philippines are pervs and they, the retirees don't like seeing the nice filipinas get abused

They don't. The reality is that ignorant racist bigots notice these prejudices because it's the reality they envision for their utopia.

You speak loud of what you noticed without backing it up with facts. I noticed that Klu Klux Klan does not exist anymore.
