Strange, cos I had the same experience. I'm Filipino born and raised in Manila but moved abroad to study. I have some relatives here and they find it awkward when I talk to them in English. I mean after some time you do adopt to the language and its just way easier. And even in Manila I've used English a lot for school and work, even friends and at home. I think it's because in the Philippines ,English is a sign of status. I know its weird but thats how it is. In Manila if you're Filipino born and you speak in English with an accent, they think you're pretentious or arrogant. It's strange how this kind of attitude remains even abroad when people are expected to assimilate to the culture and language. It's generation gap and this kind of thinking. Younger people will easily understand because of shared experience and views. Don't mind them. speak however you want to.

It's not strange babe. It's normal situation in Filipino community around the globe. If they speak in Tagalog speak the same. If they speak English speak the same language. It's also normal to see a snob Filipino abroad and look at you head to foot and asking non-sense questions. Experienced it thousand times. Just be yourself babe. Don't be strange or feel not talking to them. Remember they are your mums friends. You need to respect them. Just go on the flow. x

It is really more convenient if you love your own place including the language the country is using with. But, it is more weird if you are talking in English in front of Filipino people, it is like you hate your own dialect. Just like Jose Rizal said, "Ang hindi marunong magmahal sa sariling wika, ay higit pa ang amoy sa mabahong isda". if you don't feel comfy talking to them in filipino then don't. they can understand english can't they? just because they are filipino doesn't mean you should always speak to them in filipino.

The general thinking is that IF you speak Tagalog, you must speak it to a fellow Filipino because you ARE Filipino. (unless they speak english to you, you don't know how or are in company of non-Filipinos) You are in Canada, do you hear Chinese speaking english amongst themselves? Russians speaking english with fellow russians? French speaking english with a frenchman? NO. They are proud of their heritage. Why are there chinese signs? (TD Bank, HSBC) Chinatown? Why are there Hindi, Sri Lankan writings on restaurants? If you feel awkward speaking Tagalog to your mom's friends, then taglish maybe? If not, then our educational system back in the Philippines is not doing a good job instilling patriotism among our younger generation. IMHO.
