How do I get broadband coverage in italy?

SUN Broadband wifi low signal in rain?

  • I live in Dagupan City, Philippines and I use a postpaid plan for SUN broadband wifi...it's been raining hard in the past couple of days and the signal type went from a constant HSDPA to a low EDGE. For those familiar with the cellular wifi services in the Philippines, you will know that HSDPA/HSPA is the highest signal type you can get. EDGE is a signal type you get when 3.5G coverage is unavailable. It's weird how I had HSDPA signal type since I first got SUN (in July) and right when it's starts raining hard for a few days, the coverage goes away. Anyone have a solution to this? Sent an email to SUN but no replies yet...I've been forced to switch back to Globe Tattoo and use their 5 days unlimited surfing promo for prepaid. In the room that my gf and I are in, Globe is the only service that gets 3G/HSPA coverage when it started raining.

  • Answer:

VERY SIMPLE : Haven't you observed that when there are strong typhoons, people hardly see sunshine? For the same reason, the SUN seems to be in a bit of retreat when the rains fall.

For you to know, any obstacle can lower your signal with WIFI. but try to boost up your signal by buying a repeater antenna. thats all i can help. wifi range up to 30 to 50 meters only. i dont know with SUN visit good places in phils. : http://www.geotravelphilippines.com

Go into your SUN shop and ask to see the map of your location on their computer. The coverage is still pretty bad for SUN and it is my guess that you are near the edge of one of their ellipses. Make a note of the bearing to the antenna station as well, SSE for example. All radio signals are prone to the effect of atmospherics. SUN is also famous for dropping out at night on cellphones, but really it will be seasonal, depending on temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc. The reason I imagine that you don't get big drop out for Globe is that you are very close to a station. So even with the temporary effects of atmospherics the signal is not too diminished. Globe have invested heavily in improving their coverage over the past 2 years. Assuming that you are using a USB modem. Assuming that you are using a wireless router. ( cheap and small and great value in CD-R King ) Then you could try a different router and / or to place it as high and in clear line of sight with the station you are getting a signal from. I used to think it was rubbish that radio signals be so distorted by weather and line of sight, but after a few years working in the desert, I learnt that you could lose signal with increasing temperature and just dropping into a slight dip of a few metres ( I was using GPS radio linked correction data) . So height and line of site ( hence getting the bearing to the antenna you are getting a signal from) are an obvious improvement. A big tree on the line of sight could hurt your signal. You should try and avoid using to big a USB extension cable from the USB modem to the router, more preferable to just raise and relocate the router. If you are not using a router then you could use one, this is an easy way to find a sweet spot for the signal in your house an leave it there. You didnt mention Smart....I found it to be really good, although prepaid is 200 pesos for 5 days. I just got a SUN prepaid modem for 799 unlimited for a month so we will see ( 3 month tie-in contract ). But it will be located dead centre of an ellipse, so here's hoping.

I'm also using a Globe Tattoo prepaid. As the rains kept coming, I noticed a decrease in the HSDPA signal bars. It wasn't like this before the typhoon. There's a Globe cell tower very near where I'm at. It's not that I'm loyal to Globe or it's the best product there is when in fact it's not, but I have not switched to the others because I don't think there's a big difference in their services. I know some people who used Smart Bro because they literally live under the shadow of a Smart cell tower but 3G/HSDPA signal was so bad at one time and non-existent the next.
