How many cigarettes can the bum smoke?

  • A bum can make one cigarette out of four cigarette butts. How many cigarettes can he smoke if he has 24 cigarette butts?

  • Answer:

    The answer as I see it is as follows: 24 butts = 6 cigs 6 butts=1 cig+2 butts 1 cig == 1 butt + 2 butts therefore the thrifty codger can make a total of 7&3/4 cigarettes.

The answerer above is correct, I think. Because he can make still another cigarette from the butts of the 6 cigarettes he made from the first 24 butts. In fact, he will have 2 extra butts after creating the 7th cigarette. Yet, the resulting butt from the 7th cigarette plus the 2 remaining butts won't make another "eighth" cigarette. Btw, good question. Even if I am not sure of this answer, it was at least a good excercise. Yet if this answer is correct, somebody else gets the BA for being the first to give this answer. More!

None. You were simply stating that a bum can MAKE one cigarette out of 4 cigarette butts. You didn't say he smoked them.

6 24 / 4 = 6 Or he could have 24 cigarette butts because he already smoked thos, so then it is 24+6=30
