Are Filipino doctors competitive abroad?

Do you agree with Desperate Housewives offending remark against filipino doctors?

  • Susan Mayer, played by Teri Hatcher said, "Can I check those diplomas 'coz I just want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."

  • Answer:

I don't agree with the statement of course. But are we missing the point here? it was part of the character to commit a racist slur when upset. It's part of the story. It does not mean the writers or producers agree with it. I write short stories, and I make the characters do things I wouldn't do in real life. Otherwise we would be imposing too much limitations on our characters, and who would want to read about people who are too ordinary? Also, we make our characters do bad things because real people do bad things all the time. If all characters in books & movies are always politically correct, wouldn't that be unrealistic?

Not at all. I would have died 3 years ago when I had a heart attack if it was not for the compentancy and professionalism of Philipppine doctors and nurses. Besides why is it so many foreigners including those from the U.S. come here for medical treatment ? I find that remark paticullary offensive not only to the proud and competant medical professionals here, but to the people of the Philippines as a well. I have family here that is in the medical profession and I am paticullary offended and ashamed that that kind of remark was allowed on national T.V. All I ask is for 5 minutes alone with that moron that wrote the script.

No. I don't think think this line was written for humor. It was primarily intended to convey some writer's bigoted viewpoint- totally irresponsible and insensitive.

This is all over the net now, and in the news. This story made its debut at YAP yesterday. I say don't fret. This is a case of a once popular primetime program that is sliding down in ratings they are being moved to non-primetime (daytime) or facing the possibility of being axed. Ergo, they needed to generate some controversy. They actually like the way people are reacting! If this will help, we can do a tit for tat, and diss the Americans in local TV shows like Wowowee, Eat Bulaga, or even in our telenovelas and sitcoms. But will this make us happy? So, suggest we stop it already.

I dont care. TV shows and other programs just say things on air for publicity. For all those medical practitioners here and abroad, please dont get offended by petty remarks. Just be proud and continue with your careers. Remember you are more intelligent than those actors and script writers.

Definitely not. I am a Filipino and I know that our doctors are as qualified and as knowledgeable even if they were trained in the Philippines. Filipino nurses are known to be efficient, smart and productive.

I fully disagree from Terrie's" point of view" hers for instance. First of all she should not have insult the doctors intelligence, dedication of their work. It sounds like "terrie hatcher " has the issues.

agree or disagree, one can not sue them, they got basis from the philippine medias itself about all the controversies in med school exam.Like Bopol said, they're simply trying their last cards to get back the ratings. They very sure are aware of all the controversies that statement would create and they are ready to deal with it just as easily they have aired it.

I say don't dwell on it. Focus instead of why Filipino doctors, or Filipino workers in general have to work in foreign countries in the first place. Now that's where the 'real' problem lies.

element_115x

of course not. Filipino doctors are one of the most responsible in the world add to that the talent. maybe the script was only affected by the nursing exam leakage a couple of years ago...
