  • I am dating a filipino guy and we love each other very much. I don't know his friends well, and i've gone to 2 parties with them. Since they are all Filipino, they all speak their own language. They try to speak English in front of me, but I really don't know how to act. My boyfriend was born in the Philippines and finds it very hard to speak English with his friends. He obviously speaks English to me, and he tells me what is going on, but is it wrong that he speaks to them in his own language? (Whenever I am involved in the conversation, they speak in English)

    That is definitely normal my lady. They speak in English if you are involeved in the conversation or at least you are around to make you feel that you're part of the group and welcome.

yeah., it is..... your not the only one. i think he is shy to speak in English with his friends or does not feel comfortable speaking English with his friends... get that all the time. they just dont feel comfortable speaking in English with each other. I see that your yahoo answers is from Canada. I'm from Canada too! Calgary, i'm white too, so i feel you. But i live in the Philippines Cebu. its just like for example, English is your first language ( Filipino for them), and you always talk in English with your friends and ( Filipino with his friends ) and you were learning french, and they learn English, and when you come i dont think they want to talk in french or Filipino for them. they feel comfotable speaking in their language. Maybe you could tell him that its rude that i dont understand when you and your friends are talking.

I am white and live in manila..... get used to the language thing. It won't change. Consider yourself lucky that his friends try to speak English to you at all. Not personal, just the way they do things. Especially when they get excited, they can't think and speak English at the same time when that happens.
