Filipino with Spanish last name?
-
My friend has a Spanish last name, one from her mom and one from her dad. Her dad's last name is Vasquez. Her mom's last name is Italian. And her Grandma's last name is English. Is she atleast half Spanish? She has natural white skin, chinky eyes, and from Visayas(sp?). (I heard that the Spaniards went to Visayas) and also, her parents were born there, and so was she. Her whole family speaks Tagalog fluently. Her siblings and dad has dark skin colors, while she and her mom are light skinned. I kept on telling her that she might have a European blood in her, but she keeps on insisting that she's full Filipino. Her parents couldn't give her a clear answer either. I'm really confused because first of all, if you see her, you won't think that she's Filipino, because she doesn't look like it. People mistake her for Chinese, Vietnamese, Half-Japanese and all that stuff. Can I please get a clear answer. Could it be that she has some European blood in her?

Answer:
Here is the thing, most Filipinos cannot trace their ancestry either. But you must remember having a Spanish name does not guarantee a Spanish bloodline. For most Filipinos had to change their surnames to a Spanish one during the Spanish rule of the Philippine Islands. Second, most Filipino families are the same as what you have described, even in our family we have people with fairer skin & people with darker skin. We have people with chinky eyes & people with more rounded eyes. We have people with straight hair & people with wavy hair. It's just genetics. I myself have been mistaken for being Asian or even Mexican. But this I do know, our family do have a mixed race ancestry as do most Filipinos due to the intermarriages & such. And most have Chinese & a few more drops of Spanish blood running through their veins. And most Filipinos speak Tagalog as Filipino is taught in the schools. Nowadays is it not uncommon for most Filipinos to also have Japanese, American, Korean, Indian, European & Australian blood among others.

If you study Philippine history, you will know Filipinos who have 0% European ancestry were converted to Christianity and adopted Spanish names and last names. I myself...Looks like Korean but have a Latino name. Some people in USA who doesnt even heard about Philippines think this is weird, but of course they dont know shyt.

The Philippines was colonized by the Spaniards for 300 years. Like in many other countries that the Spaniards have conquered and colonized, many Filipinos have Spanish blood. Your friend, as you have sttaed, is from Visayan Islands, those islands are located in the central Philippine archipelago. It consists of islands- hundreds of islands. And many people over there have Spanish blood. As they have the Spanish blood in them, they also have the Chinese blood. Chinese eyes, or small eyes, is dominant for every Filipinos with Chinese blood. That is their evidence of having Chinese blood. Chinese traders are already present in various places all over the Philippines even before the Spaniards colonized it on 15th century. This is the reason why majority of Filipinos are mixed with Chinese blood or have Chinese ancestors. Filipinos who have Spanish ancestors doesn't necessary look as Spaniards or Europeans. Because, as I have said, they may have the Spanish blood but If they have the Chinese blood, they will look like kinda Chinese because of their eyes which is really dominant. These are some Filipinos who have SPANISH BLOOD, and at the same time, have CHINESE BLOOD. she probably has a spanish blood because in the early times of the Philippines there are lots of Spaniards that came here and married to Filipinos, and mostly of the Filipinos do have a european blood (spanish) but are on a small percentage only. but i can say that those spanish last names are really common here in the Philippines..actually my last name and middle name and my parent's middle name are spanish names. that's how common it is..

Filipinos has Spanish surnames because of Narciso Claveria -- just google him if you want to know more about him. He had this Catalogo de Apelledos(don't know if I got the right spelling) telling that Filipinos should adapt Spanish surnames. But not all Filipinos at that time got Spanish names. Some surnames such as Dimaano and other Filipino-sounding surnames remained because they belong to rich or famous people. That's the reason why lots of people are confused with Fancisco Balagtas' surname. His other name, Baltazar, is his adapted Spanish surname. We can't tell if your friend has that European blood on her...the only thing to find out about it is to trace her genealogy. Hope I helped.

Yes she will have Spanish & probably Chinese genes. I married a Filipino from Visayas with a Spanish family name and she has naturally white skin although she will tan very easily upon sun exposure, but like all Filipina ladies, they LOVE a pure white complexion. Her father was from China and her mother has Spanish and Filipina descendants. Many Filipina ladies have a strong Chinese look in there features, but a purely natural Filipina lady has naturally dark skin and tend to be small in height, and by that I mean approx five foot tall or below.

I think like 80%-90% of Filipinos have Spanish last names.

MY ANSWERS: "My friend has a Spanish last name, one from her mom and one from her dad. Her dad's last name is Vasquez. Her mom's last name is Italian. And her Grandma's last name is English." ::: My father's surname is Italian and my mother's surname is Chinese. My grandmother's surname is Spanish, and my grandfather's surname is Vietnamese. Surnames don't really indicate ancestry, especially when it comes to the Philippines - where surnames were just assigned by the Spaniard authorities. "Is she atleast half Spanish? She has natural white skin, chinky eyes, and from Visayas(sp?). (I heard that the Spaniards went to Visayas) and also, her parents were born there, and so was she. Her whole family speaks Tagalog fluently." ::: Most of the Spaniards in the Philippines actually went to Luzon, not to the Visayas. Most Filipinos are fluent in Tagalog. Those who aren't are only the mountain tribes and certain groups in Mindanao. ::: There was an enterprising large group of Tornatras descent - meaning, mixed Chinese and Spanish. My family is descended from a Tornatra clan, and maybe your friend's family was, too. "Her siblings and dad has dark skin colors, while she and her mom are light skinned. I kept on telling her that she might have a European blood in her, but she keeps on insisting that she's full Filipino. Her parents couldn't give her a clear answer either." ::: If she insists that she is full Filipino, then don't insist otherwise!!! "I'm really confused because first of all, if you see her, you won't think that she's Filipino, because she doesn't look like it. People mistake her for Chinese, Vietnamese, Half-Japanese and all that stuff." ::: Many Filipinos do look Chinese or Japanese because of prehistoric intermarriages. When the Spaniards came to colonize the Philippines, there were already lots of mixed Filipino-Chinese and mixed Filipino-Japanese peoples. "Can I please get a clear answer. Could it be that she has some European blood in her?" ::: Yes. As I said, she might be of Tornatra descent (Chinese-Spanish) mixed with indigenous Filipino descent. Or maybe she is also just another mixed Filipino-Chinese. Just ask her grandparents instead.
