Why do MOST FILIPINOS ORDER RICE WITH DIM SUM?

What do most Filipinos prefer - brown or white rice?

  • Our household has just recently discovered brown rice. Apparently it is more nutritionally beneficial to us and so we're giving it a try. What about Filipinos in the Philippines and elsewhere? Is brown rice fast gaining popularity too in your locality?

  • Answer:

been eating brown rice since the late 80's. but i can eat any rice , corn or bread alone add: it is gaining popularity cuz years back, one can hardly find them in the supermarkets. I even have to exchange it with white rice to those liviing in the mountains. But this I think this is limited only to the health conscious cuz it is unpalatable to some and is 4 x costlier than the NFA rice. Many filipinos way back thought the brown rice were eaten only by poor farmers as this were not marketable. Having this in demand now, i am just not sure if this are hybrid types, not the organically grown wild rice as before. Also, the rice should not be well polished as many nutrients are thrown away, as those unhusked and pounded manually are the best ones, they can not be maintained long in the market shelf or stocked in homes as they gathered mold more easily than the well polished ones. Best to stored them is have them freeze. I'm just not sure if this case is the same with those vaccum packed as little moisture is maintained in the bags.

we'd tried brown rice before, and it's not that much of difference with white rice, it's just that I'm not used with the color... I still prefer white rice... but I'd go for fried rice, for sure!

We usually eat white rice. We eat brown rice when I get to buy a bagful and sometimes mix white and brown together. Brown rice is not as soft as white rice so it is best to gradually introduce yourselves to the rough texture of brown rice, which cooks a bit longer. It won't gain popularity fast since Filipinos are used to the taste of white rice. Besides, brown rice is also quite expensive. Brown rice may be healthier but it is almost double the price of regular white rice. A lot of families even buy the NFA rice to save money.

I bought one small plastic bag. I cooked it once. Maybe, my rice cooker is not designed for it, cuz it ended up looking like undercooked and tasted hard and difficult to digest. Should I add more water, do you think? Anyway, that was months ago. I went back to white rice. The plastic bag is still nearly full. And what you're talking about they are more expensive? If I remember correctly, they are lower in price, if not equal the white ones in Riyadh. Or, probably we are not talking about the same stuff. The one I got came from Egypt. Probably, old stock and they were simply dispensing with them.

I prefer brown rice, just like what you said. Before, brown rice is a poor-man's rice, but now, I can't even buy a kilo of that in some selected suppliers. It's almost twice the amount of ordinary white rice!
