Why are people so nice and friendly in the Philippines?

Why do people in the Philippines think Balikbayan's waste money when they go to the Philippines?

  • I've heard people in the Philippines say that foreigners and Balikbayans waste money when they go to the Philippines on vacation. I understand that these people don't have much but people have their reasons for wanting to spend money while on vacation. I've heard the criticisms of there are so many people who are poor and we are just putting good money to waste. It's not like we are trying to show off our wealth or we are just spending money for no good reason. *First of all, most American's work like slaves back in the states. We stress out a lot due to work, debt, mortgage, a fast paced lifestyle, ect. We've got TONS of problems back home. Life in the US is really difficult and not as easy as people think. Its not like we're just digging gold out here. *Since foreigners are on vacation, this is our opportunity to get away from all of our problems back home. We worked very hard for our money and want to enjoy our time off. I mean you work like a horse all year and you are lucky to get 2 weeks off of work. So you might as well enjoy your time off. We're not rich overseas!!! *Imaging getting yelled at work, always in a hurry to meet deadlines at work, dealing with the high cost of living, credit card debt, mortgage, car payments, ect. Wouldn't it be nice to just get away from everything? And if you only have 2 weeks a year to get away from it all wouldn't it make sense to just make the most out of it? Anyways thats just my perspective.

Hi, I could figure out what you were trying to emphasize. Anybody who works hard have the right to get at least once a year to take some pleasure, taste the harvests of hard works (ika nga), without it life would be dry and boring. If you in the states can have the 2 wks, here in the Phils. we cannot have this long, even Christmas season doesn't give us(particularly private companies). All works experiences you have there, we have here too. But I don't want to fall out further, indeed I was relating the same situation with my husband. He's there in the US, he also works hard, and he used to visit us here in the Phils. once a year or every 9 to 10 months, and I prefer him doing it so rather than accumulating his money out there and not seeing us for quite a long time. And we used to enjoy his every stays here to the fullest. He says this is why he works hard, to meet the needs and give the pleasure of his family.

I dont think what you say reflects the mentality of Filipinos regarding tourists and balikbayans. In fact, Filipinos will love to see these visitors and expats spend in our country, because it will boost our economy and help locals with their businesses. What you probably mean is that some jealous relatives see their kababayans spend money entertaining themselves instead of giving it to them. I know this is one ugly mentality of some of us that must be eradicated if we hope to move forward.

i agree with your point here. well, for me, what do they care anyway? it's MY money! i worked hard for it and i can do whatever i want with it. people would only have a right to complain if its their money i'm spending. otherwise, it's none of their beeswax! :D

when you are in the philippines, a dollar is worth 48 times more in pesos. that should make any balikbayan richer. and i don't think balikbayans come home here to waste money. they come home to enjoy the fruit of their back-breaking labor.

Yyy aq, I respectfully disagree. The dollar peso value has little relationship to commodity costs. In fact many items in the Philippines cost more than in USA. For example sun screen, toothpaste and most OTC medicines. Most electronics are much cheaper in US. Yes, some items in the Philippines are cheaper than in USA, for example fresh fish, fruit and some other food items. Labor is much cheaper in Philippines than US. A whole roasted chicken is priced the same in RP as found in Safeway supper market in States. Americans generally make much higher wages than those in Philippines. The cost of living in US is significantly higher than RP.

ENVY... most people who say that would probably do the same thing if they also have money

"*First of all, most American's work like slaves back in the states." Maaan. That's so true. This might not be true for all people, but I know that my relatives all think that living in North America automatically gives you lots of money. It bugs me when we bring our boxes home full of stuff for them and they're not really thankful. For your main question, I haven't really met any people like that lol.

it is no waste, i find enjoyment when i give money to people who need it.

Watching a Dallas Stars hockey game- $65. Dinner for 2 at Olive Garden $54. Spending quality time with long lost relatives and stimulating the local town economy - PRICELESS.
