    you can buy at all indian grocery stores,, but they would understand if you say asafoetida. its spelled asafoetida. they use to cook dhal,, and lenthil curry and also in some indian sweet meats edit- bean is right, it is commonly used in any cookings that has beans or lentils as main ingredient that can cause gas,, it works the other way, it is called inggu in Malay,

I'm not quite sure of it's Malay name (but I'm sure someone here will help you) It was interesting to read just now that an alternative name for it is 'Devil's Dung' (poo poo) because of it's "foul smell," but it's used a lot in India because it is known to "prevent and alleviate smelly flatulence" (farts) ....how strange is that?.....
