What is cultural tourism?

What do you think of the many 'cultural shows' that our tourism dept. likes to organise?

  • to project this nation as a multiracial, diverse & harmonius nation? all the colourful and glittering jogets and ngajats and musical performances, different races hugging on stage and wearing each other's costumes and dancing to each other's music etc etc plus the craft fairs etc? mostly for the benefit of tourists as well as locals to 'enjoy'? do you sometimes get tired and a little sceptical of them? or do you think many of them are authentic, entertaining & interesting, plus reflect Malaysia as truly a 1 Malaysia or Truly Asia nation?

  • Answer:

I hear you. These shows are gaudy, tasteless, skill-less, fake and not even entertaining. I remember watching some with political delegates from other countries. These shows were laughing stock. The problem with our country is that young people no longer appreciate tradition. For a culture to survive it needs to grow, so the Ministry of Arts, Culture &Tourism (yes they are rightly combined) should promote culture before attempting to promote cultural tourism. If you care for this, please write in to the government so we can make a difference.

it's cool for the tourists to see the Sarawak/Sabah cultural shows where they dress up in traditional costumes and dance with shields and spears and blowpipes etc, but it might seem a little bit cheesy for the locals..

Hmmm... Skeptical: yes, tired: not really... I guess its because certain Malaysian people still think that's is what culture is suppose to be. Traditional. Lets start with something more everydayish... Clothes, Commercial : We're all wearing our traditional clothes. Reality : Modern clothes from t-shirts & jeans to fashion from Forever 21. Seriously traditional clothes are pretty but happens to be very impractical especially when moving around. There are even semi traditional clothes that makes life a whole lot easier. Activities, Commercial: The jogets, musical dancing and handcraft(Note: the traditional kind) . Reality: The only people who do these things are people getting paid to do it or middle aged people. The younger generation are into break dancing or less well known western classical dances...And their handcraft stems from manga and anime. And yes, Malaysians are into electronics. Harmonious Nation, Commercial: Everyone is hugging. Reality: Normal Malaysians celebrate each other's traditions, but the politicians seem alien to the idea of everyone is equal. But there are certain Malaysians who still vote for them so maybe the idea of equality hasn't reach to every single Malaysian... If we show the reality of our country, we'll lose business in the tourism...it work so far, we are rank 11 in World Tourism(2007), having 21 million tourists. Wait a Minute! France has their traditional culture including being modern and yes they don't take too kindly to people who don't speak French... And yet their tourism is...Rank 1, 81.9 million tourists. Malaysians can speak english (enough for basic communication for destinations, selling and politeness) and yet we lost to them! Maybe this is what is all about... Reinventing our own culture. France, America, Spain, UK all have done it. They don't throw all their traditions out the window, instead some are kept and the rest are made popular in books, films and they embrace modernization (and create). Maybe that why western cultures are so appealing, so...right. And maybe that's why Malaysians don't exactly like our own culture (except the food), Its stagnant... Its gotten boring. There used to be a time when people exchange patterns...like batik merge with english patterns. Its time for a change, but are we creative enough to do so and will the government be so leniant?

The short answer: They are what they are...shows only....the locals seldom or never link these shows to their "culture"...they are 80% made-up.

It's ridiculous at most. They are paid to "hug and dance" with each other. Where's the logic in that? .
