i have to write an essay for English class about the Independence day in malaysia right now i live in malaysia but because I'm new here i don't know much about anything here can anyone help me out by explaining Independence day to me and help me get started on my essay also BONUS POINTS to anyone who can tell me about Canada Independence day I'm from there and even though we don't have one i have to write about something special i was thinking Canada day July 1 but I'm not sure what to write about that either.

fajie told you the start, i'll tell you the rest Tunku Abdul Rahman went to London in 20th February (i think) 1956. Then, when he got back, the British agreed the date was 31st august 1957. Tunku then went cross country celebrating (again, i think) then, on midnight, 31st August 1957, the union Jack was lowered. that morning, Tunku and the people of Malaya (Malaysia was formed in 1963 when Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaya) celebrated in the Merdeka stadium. there, tunku chanted Merdeka!Merdeka! (or mardeka, it sounded like he said mardeka) which means Independence! Independence!

if u research the current history books in M'sia school u will see that it all started with the UMNO. But it is not so . The truth it , it all started with the Religious/Islamic movement ( if I'm not mistaken from Bukit Gantang, Taiping ) following their counterpart in the Arabic world fighting or gaining independence from the Western country. Than it is follow by certain Malay movement which is declared as the Leftist by the British. There is also the Communist party. British is more comfortable with UMNO as UMNO's agree to follow the British Law system to gain- independence.
