What is actually a malay ?
-
To be honest, I don't like the idea of identifying a race with religion where a malay = Islam according to the article 160 (3) of our constitution in Malaysia. I wish there must be a change in this constitution cause it looks kinda silly. I personally believe that the malays are people of Austronesian heritage regardless of their religion. Eventhough we have mix with other nations, I believe we are related to Filipinons, the merina people of Madagascar and also our distant Pacific islander cousin. I am sorry to raise this controversial issue, it is just that I think the article in the constitution is the main cause of confusion of identity. It is like making the malay ethnic like some kind of club that anybody can easily enter as long as they are Muslims. So my question is this, Do you believe the constitution have the rights to define us what ethnic we belong to ? how about the orang asli jakuns aren't they related to us too and also our founding ancestors ? No racist comments plz

Answer:
in fact if you had a chance to speak to filipinos they tend to tell you malaysian malays and themselves are brothers and sisters. closer to home i would believe so are indonesians. but you dont hear them say indonesians = muslims. my close indonesian friends are all christians. i dont care really who or what was the intention behind our founding fathers who thought it was a good idea that malay = muslims but let's face it. this is how f**ked the system is in our country. if it was appropriate then, it isnt now. i look at how race and religion and politics are intertwined in malaysia i just cant help but to laugh. i am just glad, very glad that i wasnt born as a malay and have the government decides what faith i should take up. i am glad, and very glad that i am born chinese.

you have answered you own question but i think it is not up to a non malay to answer..controversial ma.... But being a non malay myself, I could not accept somebody not from the same ethnicity to claim they are just because they talk like me, same religion like me but they are not "my kind". I am not racist and I am very very happy and delighted if someone would do that and I will treat them nothing less and nothing more....but ethnicity is something you are borned into it..it is special and cant be cloned.

When I studied my LAN Subject in college, I was taught that the Malay race came from one of the inner province of China, and the Malay language originated from Austronesia. And then the malays were Hindu at first, when they do business with the Arabians, many converted to Muslim.
