  • Answer:

I would say next January is a good a time as any to climb Mount K. I'm 19 and I did it myself in June this year, and it's an amazing experience, one that you shouldn't miss out if you're in the area! Laban Rata is the accommodation located at 3,000m up Mt. K, and there is no other place to stay. The price may seem expensive, but that is one night's accommodation, 3 meals, and you must also take into consideration that everything up there had to be bought by porters. If you can't afford to stay there then your only choice would be to attempt to climb Mt. K entirely in one day - I'd met some people on the way who were doing that but; a) you need to be really quite fit b) you won't get to see the sunrise at the summit You are also required to have a guide with you for the actual mountain climb, but there are various different places they can start/finish with you. I climbed Mt. K with one other friend, we hired a guide to accompany us from the place where there are restaurants and you register (Mesilau I think it is called), to the summit and back, and we paid RM60 for his services. The rates will vary on where your guide accompanies you, and how many are in your group. http://www.suterasanctuarylodges.com.my/v2/labanrata.html - Read the Guide Fee You are also required to pay a Climb Fee, this is RM30 if you are a Malaysian, RM100 otherwise. So basically, if you want to see sunrise from the Mt. K summit you'll need to book accommodation at Laban Rata, and expect to add approximately RM150 on top of that for your climbing fee and guide fee. Still, it's an incredible experience and I really think it's worth it, even if it seems like a lot of money! Hope you make it :) *P.S.* If you have somewhere to leave your main luggage then you won't need a porter, just take a daysack with plenty of water, a few extra layers, hat, gloves, waterproof jacket and camera!

this business is monopolized, if you can't get a room in Laban Rata you can't climb to the top, you need to get a tour guide and a porter to carry your luggage, i am very fit yet i can't carry by my own the cheapest is to travel 4 person in a group as you can share taxi and guide you need to have reservation in laban rata and a guide in order to get a permit the only place you can save is the day before the climb, you don't have to stay in kinabalu park but you can stay as the hostel outside it, it is much cheaper, there are two hostel there last year i climb via mersilau, i pay about RM1500 for air ticket by air asia from penang, hotel, food, porter, taxi etc, we stay 5 days in sabah, also visited Kota Kinabalu, Poring, and canopy walk exclude of buying equipments such as bag pack, jacket, gloves etc....it is 3 degree up there look at this website, one of the tips was written by me http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=37940536
