How to get a better package from a job offer?

Need advice on university teaching job offer?

  • I've got an offer for a Lecturer position in Curtin University, Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. I have a PhD from a top UK university and an M.Sc. from Japan. I have been in an University Lecturing job for 8 years but out of this my active service is for 2 years and I was on study leave for the remaining period (for doing PhD and M.Sc.). My questions are - i) I expected a Senior Lecturer position, is the offer of a Lecturer position an under-estimation? ii) They offered me a Basic Monthly Salary of RM 5600; I didnot get any information on other allowances on the terms and conditions. Don't the Malaysian (foreign) universities offer housing, transport, medical and other allowances making the total salary higher than this? Is this salary a good one (for both cases - if it is gross or basic)? iii) Do the foreign university's Malaysian campuses offer worse/ better remuneration package/ benefits than the local Malaysian universities? iv) The terms of this offer mentioned - 20 days annual leave, 1 air-ticket in 2 years, no mention of any allowances (it only said Basic Salary RM 5600) , settling-in support of RM 500 only. I find these a bit 'non-generous'. Are these usual or I got the wrong feeling? v) Is it worth taking up the offer? Thanks a lot.

  • Answer:

You have what is known as a "bare bones" offer... Seriously, you need to take this serious matter up with the University. What you have mentioned is normal...but if you do not ask for those "pecks" [ often not mentioned in any agreements] you get none of them....[ allowances for: housing, transport, relocation & settleng-in, medical, books, ]

first i hope you don't get the offer via email and they don't ask you to bank in some money in a certain account to get your working permit. RM5600 seems very low, a person with Bsc with 6-8 years of working experience do get that kind of salary. You should be asking at least double that figure

1 ) Less than 3 years active Lecturer position . you should not expected " senior " post . i believe that apply to any other university . 2 ) you should find out more detail for the offer . no once able to answer you .any " offer " to other is based on " cases to cases ". ! i don't think there is STANDARD terms and conditions. the only Information i can provide > Basic salary RM 5600 even with out other allowances . after income tax ( estimated around RM 4500 every year ) to stay in Miri - Sarawak , you life like a KING ! 3 ) you got the RIGHT to ask for more detail ? i can unstained why you do not get FULL INFO from them ? is REAL OFFER ? or just general talk ? 5 ) WORTH or not ? all in you hand. if you think you qualified for Senior Lecturer position , some other universities accept you as " Senior " and better salary / benefit .. reject them ! ********** . カーティン工科大学、シンガポールを適用してみてください。より良い給与することがで…

On your PhD and MSc is it a same field? Anyway, If you have been offered by this Univ. they should disclose all the benefits(ex: travel expense, relocation fee, overseas fee, allowance, housing) including salary. If they offer you the position as a senior lecturer surely that's what you get . I was surprised why that Univ. failed to mention the most vital information on the job description and benefits. However, if Youre a PH.D holder, you may be able to rise up faster and it pays well including bonuses that depend on your previous experience and performance. Send your resume to the Univ., your chronological information about the jobs you've have held in the past select the most relevant accomplishments, skills and experience for that position. Make sure to create a strong resume. Good luck!
