Can i use my american express card in malaysia?

  • I'm heading to Malaysia in January 2011, and the company I work for is providing American Express Cards for our use while there. I'm curious as to how many places in Malaysia (especially Penang) accept Amex cards.

Yes, go to shops like those in KLCC Petronas Tower , or those in Malls in Pavillion or Sungei Wang Metro Jaya .Bukit Bintang . Small shops may not accept international Cards for they don't have tools to verify it , but most shops and restaurant will accept it for they are international and tourism standard . Penang is a tourists destination in Malaysia and very geared towards tourist standard hotels , restaurant and shops .

A lot of retail shops and restaurant did not accept my visa cos there was no chip on my card when I was there. I guess they're trying to protect you and themselves from fraud. It's a huge thing in Malaysia. If you CAN use your card, check your bank account consistently and look for odd purchases.

Whatever Inpeach mention at above all is in Kuala Lumpur, not penang, but its unlikely there is many AMEX around, most big company is so darn clever, they provide AMEX which unlikely most shop especially ASIAN country will accepted it.
