Can I camp anywhere on Catalina Island?

Name of island which had vietnamese refugee camp ?

  • Back in 1977, my family was in a refugee camp in Malaysia. Because of language barrier and I was quite young I was not sure of the name of the island. I know it was in Terengganu. It was about 1 hour drive from the Terengganu city and near some village. The island was very close to mainland because I remembered during low tide, I could walk across the beach to main land. It took about 3 minutes for a motorized boat to get from main land to the island. I know it was not Pulau Bidong because I remembered people said that it was the other island where the held other refugees. I often heard people referred to it as either Merang or Marang although they might have meant the village and not the island. The name Pulua Besar sounds familiar but I can't quite remember. Does anyone know if Pulua Besar is the island based my description ? I have a fond memory of this island and the Malaysian people. I am wondering what happens to it now. I like to go back and visit some day.
