Cost of living in Malaysia?
-
A friend of mine wishes to work in Malaysia as a web designer. He has been offered a salary of 3500RM (malysian ringgits). He has about 5 years expereince in this field. 1. Is the salary offered, appropriate with his experience? 2. Can he expect to save some money if he earns 3500RM/month? If yes, how much? 3. What would be his savings, if he travels with his spouse? I would appreciate if some expert staying/working in Malaysia would comment on this.

Answer:
5 yrs experience isnt much. Unless you have worked in multinational company and was holding a high post previously. Also depends which university u graduated from. Standard of living differs from state to state. Its highest in JOhor bahru , kuala lumpur n followed by penang. You need about rm 15 perday for food if u were to eating outside. Rm 5 home cooked food. Transportation u need about rm 200/ month. I think the salary is ok-ok. Maybe try are just trying to accessing u well before granting more. Guess u could save up to about rm 500-1000/month. yeah i assume this saving could be done even with ur wife if she doesnt shop much. I have few friends from india earning about rm 6000 as doctors with work experience of 15 yrs. they could even afford a car here.

errr... hello. I travel to Malaysia every year... okok, i have relatives there. well, the living standard in malaysia is pretty low. it's comfortable. with 3500RM/month, you can live. i don't really know much about this kind of stuff... but your friend sounds like an expert, you know. 5 years? you should know that 3500RM is a pretty small sum... that's like 2000 US dollars. less than 2000 us dollars. mostly, malaysia is a easy-living kind of country. if you stay away from the cities. it's full of forests and everything. people don't care much about your appearances, i usually just appear in a big t-shirt and shorts. man, it's so easy. i usually go to penang and there's nice food. oh yeah, people are friendly. very nice and friendly. ermm... basically, it's just a very laid back country. ahaha not much help.

rm3500 is reasonable. - a decent apartment/condo would cost somewhere from rm600 and higher depending on location and type - cars are pretty expensive but can get rm9000 second hand or public transportation if he lives in city centre. a pass that cost RM125 means he can travel using all buses and trains for a month(reasonable eh?) -food are really cheap and in abundance. outside the house, breakfast would cost rm2-3, lunch and dinner would cost rm3-5.but this is food stall prices and decent restaurant prices. those posh places lunch can start at rm15 up and dinner rm20 up. anyhow as a comparison a KFC meal cost rm8 whilst a cup of starbucks coffee rm9. -entertainment wise, a movie ticket cost rm10,original cd rm29 above -clothes and shoes - can start as cheap as rm5 saving wise, well..hmm rm3500 is pretty good pay for a local but since he is an expat with lots of taxes, i dont think he can save much.

Lifestyle in Malaysia is CHEAP. Therefore, 3500RM is more than enough for daily expenses. Unless, of course, your friend is a big spender or wants to live an extravagant lifestyle...

RM3,500 is reasonable & I'm sure he can afford to save at least RM500 monthly (I'm sure I can) but it all depends on him & his spending habits. It also depends on where he will be located. If say, in Kuching (quiet city, so I heard) then I'm sure RM500 is no problem. I know it's not much of an answer, hope that helps.

You might be able to get higher salaries in other countries with that kind of experience.
