How is Burmese culture influenced by Korean? Wikipedia states "The culture of Burma (or Myanmar) has been heavily influenced by Buddhism and the Mon people. Its neighbours, particularly India, China, Korea and Thailand, have made major contributions to Burmese culture." How is it with korean?

Answer:
I don't know much about the Burmese culture, but after skimming through wiki, I don't think Korea has major contributions to the culture. Although Buddhism seems like the predominant religion, Hinduism seems to have a strong influence. Although Christianity may be the dominant religion in Korea today, Buddhism was the religion of choice traditionally. However, there is very little influence of Hinduism in Korea unlike India, some parts of China and Thailand. However, I do see some similarities in customs, like honorifics. I can't say for most of the Asian countries but I do know that there are honorifics in Japan, so it may be more of an "Asian" thing. As children, we are taught to honor/respect our elders and we speak with a more respectful tense to them as well. Someone who is just a year older is considered as someone "above" and we use the same respectful tense for them as well. We seem to have similar customs with funerals as well. A typical Korean funeral will also last a few days with the person being buried on the 3rd day. If the person was more influential or "higher up on the social chain", burial may happen on the 5th or 7th day. However, we do not use coins. I don't know why Korea is included in the list. Although there are many similarities with how an individual is expected to behave around another, that perhaps is more of an "Asian" thing. But in general, the culture is very different, and I don't see how Korea influenced Burmese culture.

Korea and Burma are not neighbors, so even if there was some influence, the sentence would be wrong. Wikipedia is usually fairly reliable, but it's important to remember that anyone can edit it, and when the article is one that relatively few people pay attention to ( e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_of_Burma ), a bad edit can persist for a long time before anyone notices it. In this case, the bad information was added by an anonymous user in this edit from a few months ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Culture_of_Burma&diff=prev&oldid=391414075 . It has now been removed. Generally it's best to be skeptical of claims on Wikipedia that are not directly supported by a footnote to a reputable source.
