Traveling to North Korea?

Was born in Korea but now a citizenship of Australia, and traveling to Korea?

  • I was born in Korea (my parents are also full Koreans) and lived in Australia for 17 years and became an Australian citizenship. At the end of September this year, I will be going to Korea for a vacation. What I am confused about is that apparently I had to renounce my citizenship by March 30 (at the year I turned 18). However, I am 21 =/ Is it possible if I renounce my citizenship now and not have to serve in the Korean army? Also, when I renounce my citizenship, they claim that one of my parents have to renounce their citizenship...Is this true? Or do both of my parents have to renounce it? Thanks!

  • Answer:

as far as i know if you do renounce ur citizenship as australian, you may not be able to enter korea until you are 35, which is why most of my friends went to the army before finishing off their uni course. i believe that once ur over 18 ur parents are not responsible for ur actions so therefore ur choice doesnt reflect on them, id contact the korean embassy in australia and do not go to korea unless you are sure that u wont b dragged off to the army, saw it happen : ( a friend of mine was studying here and went back for hols and then ended up going to the army !!
