  • Answer:

The British empire spread far and wide during the 13th and 14th century, including colonizing North America. Their language spread as they conquered various parts of the world. Every English speaking country (including Australia, U.S. etc.) has it's own unique pronunciation, grammar, and idioms. Currently, most countries that learn English as a second language are educated in British English. The Philippines focuses on American English because the American's occupied their country and had a strong economic influence during the later part of the 20th century. All other countries are taught in the British style of the language. This is because it is the British who create the teaching materials. Hong Kong was a strong British colony for a long period of time and was seen as a beacon for western civilization by most of the Asian countries.

i think the reason why we learn british english at school is because it's the "original" english...

We do learn BRITISH English at school, and we have a look in American English as well, even though British English is seemed to be a more 'proper' English. The reason why the Philippines, south Korea (and probably a few more smaller countries) is that the US has been occupying/allies with some countries. And for example Mexico, I guess the reason why they learn American English is because of the US is more closer to them, as you said, geographically.

America doesn't have an official language it is unconstitutional, and is just spoken widely. I'm suprise that china is taught english way. Generally India and west are taught english way. Anything east is taught america, except Hong Kong and Englands former colonies. Basically because of economic, and geographic reasons. Easier to trade across pacific than around india africa and up towards England. In america we are taught both ways, especially in the spelling. High School, you can learn the british way if you go to a bigger school. American English has more influence in the world learning the english language. If America spoke French instead the world will learn that, again for economic reasons. I do love only the british accent from england only.

I'll take a stab at it: At one time in the United States, Spanish was taught in it's Castillian Form, or in other words, The way it was (and still is) spoken in Spain, where it comes from. England is the source of the U.S.English language, so it may make more sense to learn it in the form as its source uses unless you are geographically close to the U.S.
