Teaching in a home school in Korea?
-
Has anyone taught in a home school in Korea such as Mrs. Key's home school? Can anyone tell me anything about homeschools in Korea? How would one get a job in one? What are the requirements to teach in one? I hear E2 visa holders are eligible since home schools aren't registered as a school/private school. Any information is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:
I used to teach at Mrs. Key's. There are no requirements to work for them. The problem is that the levels are usually pretty low. The children do not want to be there and all they want to do is play games. The other problem is that some of the homeschool teachers hardly speak any english. It can seem at times that theyare running the classes in Korean and the students are paying no attention to you. Be careful because the company that runs Mrs. Key's is not completely above board. They will run you ragged and then find ways to blame you when something goes wrong.

E-2s can be only given for schools registered with the 교육부 (Ministry of Education). This includes hagwons, public schools, etc. E-7s can sometimes be given for people teaching at companies, but this is very rare. In order to qualify for either, the home school would have to be either a registered school or business. I doubt most home schools would go through all these hoops just to hire a foreign instructor. They'd probably rather hire an F-visa holder. As for getting an F-visa, good luck on getting one unless you're either racially Korean or married to a Korean. The other methods to get one are EXTREMELY difficult, and in nearly five years here, I have never met a foreigner who had an F-visa and got it without marriage or blood. There's probably no realistic, legal way for you to do this unless you're a gyopo on an F-4. If you want to disobey the laws and do it under the table, that's your own choice.
