How to Study Abroad in College to South Korea?

Can I study any area in college to teach English in Korea?

  • I want to teach English in Korea after I finish college. I was wondering if I could study in any area (like business/music/health). What kind of college degree will I need? a BA? (I also remember there was this subject I'd have to take if I wanted to teach english in korea?what is it?)

  • Answer:

All you need is a BA degree from an accredited university from one of the 7 native English speaking countries. It doesn't matter what your major is. I have a BA in Ecnomics. I've been teaching English legally in Korea for 5 years. They only care if it's a high level University professor position. They'd be looking for a BEd...Get the TESOL certificate if you want, that might be what you are thinking of. It's not needed but could get you a better salary.

You can study anything in college and still teach in Korea. Depending on where you want to work then it could help to have more credentials but a BA in any major will you get you a Job teaching in a Private or Public School. For Public School you would get paid 2 million won just for having a BA. good luck

Believe it or not a friend of mine from Australia taught in Korea for over 10 years and his degree was in wine-making, so no, it really doesn't matter. My degree was in Theater and I taught there for over 2 years. Taking an ESL class would be a nice bonus but it won't mean higher pay or even a better job.

A degree in English or education will help you the most to get the best jobs, but DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT plan your degree around teaching in Korea. Almost anyone with an American / Canadian / New Zealand / etc. passport and a degree can get a job teaching in Korea, regardless of major. The schools are extremely desperate right now because the won is nearly 1,400 to the dollar, so they'll take anyone who meets the minimum qualifications. In fact, starting in 2008, not all teachers need to have degrees -- two years of college is sufficient now for public schools. So in other words, do not change your college plans just to accommodate teaching in Korea -- you can do that even if you major is completely unrelated to English teaching.
