If Koreans think light skin is more beautiful, what do they think of black famous people? Do they look ugly?

Would Koreans/Japanese/whatever think Beyonce is ugly for being dark skinned? Also would she be considered fat?(think "Single Ladies" mv) or Meagan Good? http://www.flickr.com/photos/9425973@N08/875503511/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/anti-media/3584991301/ if a Korean is dark are they treated differently than lighter Koreans?

Answer:
From my experience, they don't consider them ugly. Beyonce is considered very beautiful. (and not fat) As is Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, and other famous actresses that are well known in Korea. Truthfully, unless you're talking to someone who's into hip-hop/r&b or black culture, there aren't many black actors and actresses that are common knowledge in Korea. When i first lived there, people used to comment that i was handsome and that i looked like Usher. I thought... "um... okay... I'll take that as a compliment. " then, a person i'd just met told me that i looked like Denzel Washington. I thought, "??? wow... i don't think so, but thanks!" Then, the next week, the same person told me that i looked like Will Smith. Later, that same evening he told me I looked like Eddie Murphy. There's no way a person can look like Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington and Will Smith all at the same time. Another example, I watched "Dreamgirls" with a friend, and i commented on how i thought Jennifer Hudson was cute and had a outstanding voice. My friend (a girl) overlooked the "outstanding voice" part and called me crazy for thinking she was cute. She said that she was too chubby and that Beyonce was a better singer and better looking. So, truthfully, i think that although Koreans consider light skin more beautiful, i think that it applies mainly to Koreans, and they hold black people in a different category. If a genuinely beautiful black person were to appear, they wouldn't say they're ugly just because they're black. And anyway, money and fame makes everyone look 10x better, no matter where you live.

This is a difficult question to answer and I'm not sure I can answer it well. I am descended from Korean parents and born in North America, so I know very little about what goes on in Korea. I do know Koreans in general were traditionally wary of foreigners. They are proud to be Koreans and like to think of Korea as the best people. After all, they have been invaded so many times. They are in between Japan, China, and Russia, so what do you expect. When Europeans started trading with the Chinese and Japanese, the Koreans didn't want them on their land since they know what they brought to places like China (colonialism, etc.) I am quite dark skinned for a Korean- tanned. I think they see me fine, but if they see a person of similar tanned appearance like filipinos, I don't think they would welcome them dearly. Now, Korea is a very powerful and democratic country that has modernized so I think attitudes are changing. I don't think it matters what degree the color of your skin is, but how you act and how beautiful you appear as a person of that skin color and also how rich or affluent you are. Since now, they are obsessed with fashion and beauty (look how many tv stars are do surgery-like all) and money or influence, that seems to be more important than the color of your skin. Btw, Koreans don't like being seen as similar to Japanese. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese all seem to see each other as very different peoples. Some Koreans don't like Japanese because of their colonial rule over them in the early 20th century. Others don't like Chinese because they support North korea. There are tons of reasons. But I would say there are plenty of nice and kind Koreans who do not care about differences and are sincere and genuine. Every country has good and bad people.

they would think they're beautiful. do you consider small eyes beautiful or big eyes beautiful? A lot of Korean people think Su Ae is one of the most beautiful celebrities despite the fact that she has the opposite eye feature that we usually associate with beauty (double eyelid). Skinny is the majority rule, but some people like chubbier girls. I think you picked out one physical feature among many, then juxtaposed it with something implying racism. Koreans might be xenophobic and some might actually be racist and view darker people as slightly inferior, but it's not because of the color of the skin, but rather because they associate darker people with poorer countries, and view them as lazy... then again, almost all countries are considered lazy by Korean standards (most hours worked in the world i believe). Beyonce is a HUGE superstar in Korea. There are some Korean artists who've basically made a career out of being a great dancer BY imitating Beyonce's dances (Park Gahee from After School is just such a case). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsFhhpeUb08&feature=related This is the EXACT moment that people moved away from Uee to Gahee in After School. Prior to this nobody really cared about her. Plenty of Koreans view tanned Koreans as looking healthy and attractive. Even the Japanese view it that way. The majority rule is lighter skin, but a sizable minority like the darker, tanned look as well. I mean, c'mon even among my black friends, they don't think girls that are REALLY REALLY REALLY dark attractive either... it's just preference.

Short and sweet: Lee Hyori is the QUEEN, and her skin is pretty dark.
