Where can we see old TV dramas?

WHY do people watch asian dramas?

  • I have this one friend who will not stop bugging me to watch her Korean dramas. Neither of us are asian. White as wonderbread! I like certain animes, and so does she. And now she is trying to convert me to asian dramas. I LOVE LOVE my tv shows in america. House, Bones, NCIS, all that kind of stuff. I watch religiously! I watched a couple episodes of a korean one, and turned it off. The people could not act at all, the plot was cheesy and stupid, and things that were "supposed" to be funny just fell flat. And acourding to my friend, most of them end tragically. Why would you watch a crappy show that ends with the girl dieing?!? PLEASE explain what you see in them. I think my friend just likes the hot guys -_-

  • Answer:

You probably just watched the wrong drama. Yes, a lot of them are low budget and end sadly...but the same can be said for a lot of American movies. You just have to find the right one, because not all of them are like that. Some are incredibly well done and end happily....which is good, because there's enough tragedy in this world as it is, and I won't watch anything that ends in tragedy. I started watching them because I was tired of having my favorite shows suddenly become all about sex. That's boring, and for the most part, Asian dramas aren't just about sex. They actually have plots. That's a bit of a selling point for me. And there are a few Asian actors who could rival any American television star. Raine Yang, Mike He, Ming Dao...they're fantastic. You should try something with one of them. I'd be happy to give you a recommendation or two, but I think you'd have to give me more of your interests (comedy, mystery, ect.). There aren't really any exactly like House--you want comedy mixed with mystery, and while there are some really great dramas of each kind, I can't think of any that combine the two. If I'm only going to get one shot at this, though, I need to make my choice a great one. If you're interested, send me an email. I'd be happy to help.

I love both American and Asian dramas/shows, and these are some of the few differences I noticed: 1. American shows revolve around lots of sex and hooking up. Two people would be together in one episode, then another in another season (it's even very common to just have sex and don't hook up). 2. American shows involve lots of kissing scenes. Probably like 5 or 6 scenes in one show. 3. American shows aren't consistant with couples. Gossip Girl is the perfect example. You hook up with one guy, and you're with his best friend in the next episode. 4. American shows has lots of seasons. They're usually at its peak at around 1~3 seasons, but starts to get repetetive and boring afterwards. Asian: 1. Asian shows revolve around what Asians render as "true love". There are BARELY any sex scenes in Korean dramas, let along kissing scenes. 2. Asian shows are VERY consistent with their couples. The drama usually revolves around a boy and a girl progressing to like each other, then staying together throughout the whole drama. 3. Asian shows have very few kissing scens (most of the time) but they're memroable. The kissing scenes are usually very dramatic and memorable, it happens only a couple times and they make sure that it's something that you'd remember. 4. Asian shows are usually very short. Korean dramas always end with 1 season. That are some of the basic differences I can think of. I do enjoy both shows. If you want light, hot, sexy love stories, go with American ones. If you want dramatic, deep, beautiful love stories, go with Asian ones.

Which one did you watch? Maybe it was a bad one. But yeah i think some, if not most, of them are annoying, but in a way addicting as well. Their culture's just different, so there's a lot of overacting and dramatic stuff we're not used to. They are cheesy, but sometimes that's just the fun of watching them. They also tend to drag on a lot. But in the end, they're still a guilty pleasure of mine. Maybe give dramas one more chance.

I agree with you. I know quite a few white females and the ladies of my Chinese family also insist on watching KOREA tv shows and nothing else. I think the white females have an asian fetish.

I watch NCIS, Law and order Svu, how i met your mother and white collar religiously! Not aweek goes by when I don't watch it. On the other hand I am still stuck the beginning episodes of korean dramas which I really liked and want to watch. The difference is the korean dramas are more of a soap. They include lots of drama, lot os cheesy romance. It might not be every girl's favorite genre but most like those thing. I know deep down I do!! lol! I am not so I hope you can somewhat relate to my explanation. korean language is totally different than english. Not to mention the expressions they use are totally totally different. I don't speak english the same way I say korean. So what you might think is bad acting could actually be good in Korean, you are just not used to it. It takes time to get used too =] As for the korean guys! oh yeah they are super cute. My friends tried to get me hooked on to korean things for MONTHS. And then I finally got into a music band from there to movies (which was a much easier transition) then slowly the dramas. It does take time though. You friend must have seen the bad tragic dramas. Most of them do not end in a sad note. =(

Actually, the difference i feel is that: American films: always are disaster movies or -man movies (superman, batman, spiderman, etc.) British films: don't need to say. Who the heck watches coronation street except old ladies? so the dramas actually contain some action in them, whether they are historical or modern. I would recommend you to watch historical ones. the only modern drama that i liked was Air City. I now watch (i dunno the name) where one young girl is actually the king's daughter, and her dream is to become the first female king in korea. that's pretty good, if you don't mind it being very political. Anyway the problem with just not being funny is your own taste, you don't have to laugh at em. choose a drama that you like to watch, there's plenty of serious ones...
