What would have happened, God forbid, if what happened at Virginia Tech happened instead in Korea?

While there appears to be no signs of backlash against Koreans or Korean-Americans of yet, what would have happened if a foreigner had shot 33 people in Korea? I think the public reaction in Korea would be quite different with huge and violent protests in front of the American Embassy in the city centre of Seoul, possible calls for boycotts of American products, etc. One only needs to look at what has happened in the past when a Korean national was injured, raped, or killed by an American serviceman to see how violent the reaction was when only a single victim is involved, not to mention the reaction there would be if there were 33 victims instead.

Answer:
There will be no backlash against Koreans or Korean Americans here in the US. This was an isolated incident from a young man who was mentally ill His family is suffering also. We here in the states now need to be focused on healing and improving security so that this kind of thing can not happen again His family has issued an apology statement and is working along with law enforcement to make sense of eveything We do not look at this as a racial issue at all

Some of them will, some of them won't react as what you said. But have you ever thought what Americans reaction will be if their citizen shot 33 people in Korea?
Alchemist =)
guns are illegal in korea... if a foreigner killed 30 people in korea...it would be by a different method most likely.

"We do not look at this as a racial issue at all." Well, a lot of Americans are. One guy already is asking people if we should go to war with South Korea because of this incident. Luckily, sane people outnumber the insane and the guy has been getting quite the opposite answers he was expecting. RACISM IS CRUEL.

We look at things differently in the US. I think it would be much worse than what you say. You wouldn't want to walk dark streets at night for fear drunk ajoshis who might attack you on a whim muttering comments about colonialism.

It is a totally different situation. the servicemen in Korea are there to do their job, backed by USA congressmen. They are not, or should not mentally challenged, and they are representing their country while they are there to do their duty. Cho, in the other hand, was just a poor sickco who grew up in states, and repreaset nobody but himself.

Figured someone would taint the Answers site with this kind of foolish rant. Thanks for proving me right.
