I've heard that you can go into North Korea from South Korea.?

I met someone who was teaching in South Korea. They told me you could go into North Korea and that a guard would follow you around. You wouldn't be able to interact with the people. Anyone know about this?

Answer:
Shellster is the only one that has given you close to the correct answer. Up until last year there were regular trips available for tourist to Gumgansan. However, after a NK soldier shot a South Korean housewife tourist in the back for accidentally wandering into an off limits area, those tours are on indefinite hold. The only people allowed to go directly from South Korea to North Korea right now are the workers at the Kaesong Industrial Complex. Otherwise, you would have to arrange a tour through Koryo Tours and go via Beijing to get to North Korea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaesong_Industrial_Region http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C5%ADmgangsan http://www.koryogroup.com/

South Koreans do go to "Geum Ghang San (금강산)" for school trips and this mountain is in North Korea. However they're highly guarded with North Korean soldiers watching over their every move and a guide accompanying them 24/7. If you're one of the tourists, you're not allowed to interact with the North Korean citizens.
