How popular is K-pop internationally?

What makes Kpop so popular and just how popular is it?

  • What is it that makes Kpop so popular? Just how popular is it globally? How popular is it in Asia? How popular is it in Korea? How popular is it East Asia? How popular is it in Southeast Asia. How popular is it in the West? I know some Cascuasians and black people in my country who listen to it (I live in the UK).

  • Answer:

    I've heard that K-Pop is popular for many things. The catchy lyrics, the rhythm/beats of the songs, the less-Americanized lyrics, and of course, the visuals. I like it because it sets me apart from other people. It makes me different, and it opens me up to a completely different culture. I'm Korean, and I now feel ashamed that I didn't even barely even cared about my native country before I discovered K-Pop. After K-Pop, I started developing pride about myself and my country as I realized how many people appreciated it. Globally... Well, it's definitely less popular globally then people say it is. "Hallyu Wave" and "K-Pop Domination"... All of it is highly exaggerated. I think as of right now, even J-Pop (Japanese Pop) is more popular than K-Pop. K-Pop isn't as powerful and broad as you might think - compared to American Pop, it's basically minuscule. In Asia, many people are just starting to discover K-Pop. I wouldn't think that it's too popular, but popular enough that at least a couple people from each part of a country might know it. Of course, it all depends on how much Korea is exposed in that part of Asia. In Korea, K-Pop is almost as influential as the Bieber Fever. Seriously, even I admit that as a K-Pop fan, I'm happy with listening to low quality music but being able to gloat over my favorite band (no matter how bad they are, I'll accept it.) A majority of people prefer pro-artists or solo singers over groups of young people dancing on stage. I'd say it's more popular in East Asia than Southeast Asia. But I'm not sure on how to compare the popularity between them. Where I live (North America), K-Pop is only known among other Asians or Koreans. The so called 'K-Pop Craze' has yet to reach here. But I don't think K-Pop should be forced upon people to like, and I'd rather that it stayed in South Korea. People are not very accepting of other cultures in some places, so I hope that K-Pop will take it slow, you know? ^^

They have choreographed dance. They dont just fist pump in the air and shake their heads like idiots or stand lifelessly on stage while playing the guitar (taylor swift *cough*)

I think one of the things that makes kpop so popular is that they don't sing or rap about drugs and all of those typical things you would normally hear with music in American pop music. Another thing is that when they create upbeat music, they really try to make you happy and make you want to dance with the song. And when it's a sad song, it tugs at your heart. Of course though, this is speaking just for me. I mean, the reasons I stated where definitely what distanced me from American music. As for how popular it is, of course it's popular in Korea, LOL. But anywhere else, I'm not sure. o_o;

It's popular all over the world. They have fans in Europe, Australasia, USA, Asia, etc. It's popular because of the music and style I guess. I mean, I LOVE how they dress and style. And their music, are really catchy, not the usual drugs/sex/weed/etc stuff. Well, I think it's getting a bit out of hand with all the new groups and all, but anyways, and they have specific dances to go along, and that makes it even more fun because you can dance along.

Kpop is popular because of many reasons, but people have pretty much given their reasons. Globally, Kpop is slowly growing. People are getting more and more into it, from everywhere. It's even sneaking into North Korea. In Korea, It's popular, because it's Korean Pop. Obviously. But many Koreans do not like people who want to become Korean just because of the industry because they have to learn about traditions as well, I feel the same way about Chinese but hardly anyone even listens to Cpop. They just love our food. In East Asia, it is quite established. Especially in Japan as it is a place most popular groups/soloists will go sometime in their career to promote. Korea and China have a very interesting relationship, Kpop is more common in China than Cpop is in Korea. They often exchange singers, as some Koreans go to the Chinese music industry and some Chinese people will join the Korean music industry. For us Westerners (I'm Australian/Chinese), It's not quite popular yet but it will grow eventually, and then us people who followed kpop before it became too mainstream, will have ultimate knowledge.

Honestly, I think it's because of the good looking people in the industry. I mean, look at all the boy bands, don't they rather good looking members? Of course, it's also because of the catchy music, like the use of autotune, that attracts teenagers. Teenagers like dance music that they can remember and dance to, so KPOP offers that. KPOP also has very interesting dance moves (see Sorry Sorry by Super Junior! People caught on! See Ring Ding Dong by SHINee, see Man Man Ha Ni by U KISS!) which people like to follow because they are quite cool. And they also make cool music videos with a lot of fan service in them and interesting storylines! :) It's more popular in Asia than anywhere else. In Asia, it's of course, most popular in Korea and maybe Japan. KPOP has spread to other parts like Thailand, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines etc. Can't say how popular, but VERY popular. Concerts have been held in the above places before... Though it is not as popular there, it is still quite popular in the West. People in France actually know KPOP. Americans listen to it too, probably because of the American Koreans there, if not for the Internet. Oh! Australians listen to it too (I've got friends there...)! But the KPOP craze hasn't really reached Australia yet.

It's the Hallyu wave, more popular than God.
