Do you have to be of an asian race/ethnicity to audition for a korean entertainment company?
-
I know it may seem odd for me to ask this question but do you have to be of an asian descent to be accepted into a korean entertainment company? I am an american who wants to try out but doesn't know if i will be even considered in the long run... I am completely in love with the music and am currently learning the language. I can already speak many languages such as English, French, Japanese, and a little Spanish. I was considering auditioning for SM entertainment, JYP entertainment, and so on so forth. So does anyone out there on the internet have an answer to my question??? Please answer if you do. Thank you :)

Answer:
No, but you probably won't get very far if you aren't. I'm not saying that Korea only wants Koreans in their entertainment circle but Korea is around 98-99% Korean-- so it only makes sense. I've heard of a couple Chinese people in some pop groups -- but I've never seen a European/American in Korea being a celebrity unless it was for a select role in a drama or for being able to speak Korean [like on "Beauties Talk" and Arirang TV] or some such thing. [I'm not talking about overseas Koreans]. We can't really blame them. I mean look at how hard it is for Asians to get non race based roles in the U.S/Europe even today -- and the west is much more diverse and "open".

No you don't have to be asian to audition. Legally they have to say that. But they only accept those that have asian blood in them. And they generally only debut full asians. But Isak is a hapa but she's half Korean so yeah. If you're not even part asian, don't even bother. All the other asians will give you dirty looks and laugh at you.

Nope. People of any race can audition. but i think that if you're asian, you have a higher chances of getting in.
No you don't however you do need a uniqueness in your talent and, of course, speak the language. I am not a huge listener in Korean music but I haven't seen any big names that aren't Asian in the industry. Plus, I've seen tons of non-Asian people tryout... Just a heads up from my observations, I just want to tell you your chances getting is small (please don't think I'm being racist. This is just from perspective)
Goodbye Toby.
cherry is right, if you're not asian, you're not going to get far, it's just like america, asians don't get really famous in America.. but, you're most likely not gonna get far, and you're not even probably get in, if you do get in, you're probably not gonna debut..

Exactly what Cherry said. If you're not atleast half asian then don't bother. You don't have to be Korean but you have to be Asian. To answer your question-you don't have to be of asian race but you won't get in

I think you can go to the audition if you have a really really big skill in music. you know Nickhun of 2PM, Hangeng of Super Junior, Jia & Fei of Miss A they nationality isn't Korea, but with a big passion to be an entertainment now they can debut with their group. Nationality isn't a big problem if you want to audition. So you can try it now and study hard to be a trainee in korean entertainment company

I listen to a lot of k-pop music, but I haven't seen any non-asians in the Korean music industry. There are a few artists from America too, but they are mixed Korean; eg. Jessica and Tiffany from SNSD (both born in California), Jay from 2PM (Seattle), Nicole from KARA (California), Krystal from f(x) (sister for Jessica; California). Other than Koreans, there is Nichkhun from 2PM (Thailand), Hangeng from Super Junior / SJ M (China) or Victoria from f(x) (Chinese) who speaks fluent Korean so you might want to fix that too. However, if you're talented I think you should really try out. Good luck! (PS, sorry most of the celebrities I listed are from SMEnt, I started k-popping because of SHINee ><)

Definitely yes. Although they say you can be any race, it's an unsaid iron strong rule that yes, you absolutely must be Asian. kpop is kpop, it's supposed to be Korean. America is very unique for having black singers, caucasian singers, hispanic singers, asian singers all in one country in the entertainment industry without everyone going GASP THERE'S A BLACK SINGER?! Whereas in Korea, there is only one ethnicity, which is Korean, so it's normal for them to only have Korean singers in Kpop. It's only recently ( by recently I mean in the past decade) that they've been accepting Chinese or Thai (Nickhun is the only example I can think of) singers, but that's only because of incredible singing or dancing skill, or AMAZING good looks. I don't Korea is ready for any non-asian singers or entertainers yet.
