Questions about life in South Korea?
-
Hello! 안녕하세요! I am a 22 year old college student and I am trying to find out information about South Korea! I am an English major and a Japanese minor, but I have been trying to learn some Korean as well (I only know a little!) : ). I am trying to learn about life in South Korea so I can decide if I would like to study abroad there. I had been planning to study abroad in Japan for a really long time, but the programs at my college are too hard to get into, are extremely expensive, and I need a higher grade average to be eligible. I have never been to Asia before (neither has ANYONE in my family!), but there are many other study abroad programs to places like China, South Korea, and Vietnam that I am able to apply for. I am very interested in the Korean language (which I am required to study 6 credits of for the South Korean program), but I do not know much about the country. I am a vegetarian (I do not eat fish or meat), so I don't know if that would make it very difficult for me to study there. I also have heard that there is a lot of widespread animal cruelty (such as eating stray cats and dogs, horse fights...), but I don't know if that is actually true! I understand no country is perfect, but I want to make sure that I choose a program that I feel comfortable with. Thank you so much for your help!!! 고맙습니다!

Answer:
I lived in both Japan and South Korea. Even though I am married to Japanese women and did enjoy Japan, I believe the South Korea is better. The Korean are much more open to foreigners. In most of Japan they are resisted to Japanese people. In addition, the cost of living in South Korea is significantly less. Finally, place like Pusan (a large Seaport city) there are very few foreigner. It is also very easy to learn the Korean Language. Hello~ in Korea there are almost no vegetarian restaurants lol. Everyone eats pork, beef, fish, though their are few vegetarian dishes. It would be difficult for vegetarians, unless you go to the market and cok up your own food. Korea is very Asian, and it is not very international like multinational countries like Japan and Singapore.. there would be racists in korea. But of course, a few peope would (less than 10% is fluent in English) but Koreans speak VERY basic English. l In Singapore, where the population is 80% Chinese, there are tons of tourists (I've been there :P) and the university is really good too. national university of Singapore is one of the TOP university in Asia. Yes, we do eat dogs, but not cats from what I know. 2 years ago, when I was in Korea I've been to a dog restaurant but of course i did not eat dog. Korea has the second highest college fees in the world after USA,btw. Even koreans find it expensive to pay. However, in the SKY universities (SNU, Korea University, and Yonsei University) the top tier universities in Korea, they offer international programs taught in English, anad also, for international students like you, you would have to take Korean as a language program. If you want to learn more about Korea I think there are programs like Korea studies or asian studies. Check out these links http://www.useoul.edu/ http://www.yonsei.ac.kr/eng/ http://www.korea.edu/

A common misconception is Koreans picking off dogs and cats on the street and eating them. They are a first world nation. Most people do not have to stoop so low. However some people do enjoy dog as a meal. And where in the world did you hear about horse fights? However, as a vegetarian you should realize that Koreans eat a lot of meat. Not very many vegetarian friendly choices at restaurants. Of course, if you search around you can find some very nice vegan restaurants but it'll take some digging. Animal rights are not giant concerns in Korean society, but they do not frequently go around violating them. After all, no people like hurting animals for the sake of hurting them. As for Korea as a nation, it is one of the safest nations in the developed world. Children as young as 6 or 7 often go around on the subway and buses on their own with no great reason to worry. As for environmentalism, I would say Korea is taking its steps. It recently replaced its taxi fleets with hybrids in attempts to lessen gas usage. It prides itself on its cheap and reliable public transportation system (although Japan has an equally as magnificent one). As a foreigner to Korea, you may experience the occasional stare or two. You have to understand that Korea is an extremely homogeneous country. While non-Koreans are not a rarity, they are not something most people see on an everyday basis. Korean is a first world nation and many of the experiences you expected out of Japan may apply to Korea. If you want some talk on Korea from other expatriates, read some blogs. However, be forewarned - blogs tend to focus more on the problems of Korean society rather than what they typically enjoy about it. Do not let it detract you from considering the country, however remember that knowing the problems of Korean society is just as important as knowing its positive points. http://samedi.livejournal.com/ www.rjkoehler.com www.askakorean.blogspot.com www.roksojourn.blogspot.com http://roboseyo.blogspot.com/ Try contacting some of these people.
